~ BOOK TRAILER ~

~ EXCERPT ~
After helping her up onto the tailgate, I grab the wine and two glasses. When I join her in the bed of the truck, I pour us each a cup and then lift my glass up to hers for a toast.

“Here’s to first dates.”

After clinking her cup with mine, she takes a delicate sip, and the rumble in my chest comes unexpectedly as she swallows the wine.

As if on cue, the radio changes, and the first twangs of Jackson Young’s “If It Ain’t Too Much To Ask” drift out across the lake.

After we set our cups down on the edge of the truck bed, her arms wrap around my neck. My palm splays over her lower back as I tuck the sweetness of her body against mine.

“You makin’ it a habit of wooing me with your dancin’ skills, cowboy?” She laughs, and the way it mixes with the song has to be the most heavenly thing I’ve ever heard.

My cheek brushes hers as we dance closer. “That depends.”

“On?” Her breath whispers against my ear.

“If it’s working or not.”

She laughs again, and with God as my witness, I’m a lucky bastard to be holding her right now. “It might be,” she teases.

Her body was made for mine. Pressed together, we’re even more perfect. Strawberry wine dousing our inhibitions in wild desire.

The chorus to the song is coming up, and knowing I don’t suck at least half as much as she does, I sing softly into her ear, albeit still out of tune. She joins me, singing adorably off tune into my ear. “I know it ain’t an easy life, people can tell you that”—She hums along, folding her body closer around mine—“but to ask for a little bit, just a little bit back, If it ain’t too much to ask..”

“If it ain’t too much to ask,” her voice sings adorably off tune into my ear.

I chuckle, and she reaches down to elbow me in the side before her eyes find mine once again.

“If it ain’t too much to ask, cowboy…I could really go for that kiss right about now.” She tries to sing along with the song, but by adding her own words, she fails miserably.

But it’s the thought that counts.

Do I hate that she felt she had to ask for it? Bet your ass I do. Will it stop me from giving her what she wants? Not a chance in hell.

Tipping my invisible cowboy hat towards her with one hand, I put the other in the hair at the base of her neck. “Nothing you ask will ever be too much, London.” With that, I give in to the greatest temptation I’ve ever had and every desire I’ve ever dreamed of.

It’s only with unique restraint that I’m able to keep my lips from fully crashing down onto hers. Instead, I take her softly, certain I’ve died and gone to heaven at the first taste of her. When she whimpers, the greed in me takes the opportunity to slip my tongue into her mouth, claiming all she’ll give me. Her hands pull at the base of my neck, desperate to have me closer as the heat in our kiss grows deeper as the song comes to a close.

After breaking apart, I rest my forehead on hers, running my thumb across her bottom lip. Then I sing the very last line, holding her close.

I kissed the prettiest girl I’ve every laid eyes on while dancing on the tailgate of my truck in the middle of nowhere, and it was the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Guaranteed.

~ ABOUT THE AUTHOR ~
ANNE JOLIN

Hey y’all,
I was born and raised in Ladner, a small farm town just outside Vancouver, Canada. I grew up riding horses, shooting guns, and driving in trucks.

I never expected to be an author. A massage therapist? Yes. Take over the family construction company? Yes. But an author? No. Writing was something that snuck up on me and rooted itself into my life. It was beautiful to discover that love, and I’m truly grateful to say I’ve found my passion.

Since I’ve always been a creative person, it feels amazing to harness all of that energy and use it to tell a story I love. I enjoy incorporating bits of my real life into the stories I write. What parts are true? Hah. I’ll never tell—what would be the fun in that?

If I could leave y’all with one thing, it’s that life’s far too short to not live it out loud. Drown in your passions, hold on tight to the things that inspire you, and chase your dreams relentlessly. I can promise you without a doubt that you won’t regret it. I know I don’t.

Mad love,
Anne Jolin

Sunday Review: Sage Blog Tours Presents: Unholy Bargain by Travis Hallden Holt

Title: Unholy Bargain
Author: Travis Hallden Holt
Source: Received a copy in exchange for an honest review
Purchase Link: AMAZON

Blurb:

An assassin is at work—one of the best in the trade. His body turned to dust long ago, but his spirit roams the Earth freely, undetectable to the five senses. He stalks his victims waiting for just the right opportunity. Then, in quick succession, he possesses a human host and strikes down his quarry. For a century and a half he has served this way.

Deputy Sheriff Nate Barrington is riding the crest of a new relationship. Kaitlyn Spencer is beautiful, altruistic, enlightened—everything he's not. She teaches classes in New Age philosophy at her growing school. Nate doesn't share her spirituality, but the physical passion hasn't subsided enough for him to care.

Nate's nirvana quickly unravels when Kaitlyn's life is threatened on two separate occasions. With no apparent motive or any evidence suggesting collusion, the police are stumped. Even more troubling to Nate, Kaitlyn is eventually convinced she is the target of unseen forces.

A hardheaded pragmatist, Nate isn't prone to believe that spirits can possess people. As far as he's concerned, Kaitlyn's claims of perpetrators possessed by a spirit assassin are on par with comic book stories and have nothing to do with reality, and her esoteric, New Age mumbo jumbo begins to drive a wedge into their relationship. And why Kaitlyn? What secret is she hiding?

Even with the sheriff's resources at Nate's disposal, the odds for Kaitlyn's survival are not in her favor. The true enemy is virtually invisible, and Nate's conventional police tactics have no effect on the spirit world. Strikes come from anytime, anywhere, and from random, unwittingly manipulated people. With their relationship buckling under the strain, they must pull together and join an unlikely ally if Kaitlyn is to remain alive.

Review:

Wow ... I gotta say I wasn't sure what to expect but this wasn't it! What a REFRESHING book!!!

I really enjoyed this one.

Okay lets see where to start ...

First I loved that there were multiple story lines all mingled into one. I really enjoyed the equal balance of different characters all while it happened concurrently.

I would have liked to have seen more backstory on each character some because I really enjoyed them all and felt like because it was so shared you missed out on other things regarding their lives.

The writing style was very easy to follow and kept at a steady pace. I didn't really feel like there were any lag times or things that just didn't need to be in the story. Very tight editing.

What I really enjoyed was how different this story was. The whole spiritual possession and all of that, very good!

I am so glad I agreed to review this book because for so long it felt like there had been a slue of disappointing books. And then this came along.

4.5 stars for a great story!

REVIEW

When I read the blurb for this book I got really excited. I love hitman type stories and thought this would be a good addition.

I selected correctly. The story is in first person and you know how I love first person. It is so easy to be drawn in.

The writing style felt different than my normal authors but that isn't a bad thing. One of the good things about branching out and reading new people.

Before I agreed to review this book I looked up some of the other reviews about this author and he seems to be very well liked. I can understand why.

I always love books where the main character has a bit of issues. If you like books like that too then I recommend this one. I don't think you will be let down.

4 solid stars for this book.

Secret Cravings Author: L. Marie brings you Take My Hart: Hart Brothers 1

Take My Hart: Hart Brothers 1

By L. Marie

Erotic Contemporary Romance Short Story

She had thought she’d lost him seven years ago. But he walked back into her life…and into

her bed.

Shelby Detweiler had thought she’d gotten over Brandt Hart. Time had healed her broken

heart. But a chance meeting in her office throws her off kilter and Brandt is there to steady her.

She wants to trust him, to believe he’s relationship material once again. Soon passions flare but

will she get burned?

Seven years earlier, a night of drinking and infidelity had destroyed his relationship with the

woman he loved. Years later, he strolled into her office with business on his mind. But being

close to her is enough to rock his world. Several sizzling moments in her office rekindles the fire.

He wants her back.

Will an evening of passion drive them back into each other’s arms? Or will the flame blow

out forever?

For the tenth time in the last five minutes, Shelby Detweiler checked her reflection in the

full-length mirror. Nothing had changed. She was still wearing the same Donna Karan suit jacket

and matching skirt in the shade of soft peaches. A silk, black tank top peaked from underneath

the blazer. The fabric lay cool and light against her porcelain skin. Long, mahogany brown locks,

held at the nape of her neck with a hair tie, fell over her shoulder and cascaded down her ample

chest. Black, four-inch, Nine West heels added to her five-foot, seven-inch frame and

complemented her shapely legs.

With a hearty sigh, she turned away from the mirror and paced her office. She glanced down

to the floor. Nope, she hadn’t worn a path in the plush, tan carpeting. A nervous laugh bubbled

up her throat.

Why am I acting like such a child? At the age of twenty-seven, she was beyond her college

days. But those college days had scarred her, destroying her faith in relationships and men in

general. Damn Brandt Hart all to hell! He had been her first—and last—true love. Her heart

thudded hard against her breastbone. Any thought of him sent her pulse racing and her stomach

summersaulting. No other man had the ability to fluster her so. She had dated in the past, but no

one was Brandt.

But he had burned her.

They had talked about a future together. Marriage. Children. Then, he had slept with Dina.

He had claimed he had gotten drunk at a party with a bunch of his teammates and the

Haydensburg University cheerleaders and one thing had led to another. After, Dina had spread a

rumor that Brandt had been the father of her child. Turned out to be a lie, but the damage had

already been done.

Shelby had finished the semester at HU then transferred to another college. But she had

never truly moved on. Brandt had still had an iron grip on her heart. She could deny it, but what

was was. Nothing fazed the feeling she had once had—still had—for him.

Damn him!

And in about five minutes, he would be strolling back into her life. Not permanently, but she

would see him again, and a flood of emotions would swallow her in their depths. She’d want

him. Both mentally and physically. She would fight, and she would likely lose the battle.

~ EXCERPT ~
When Beth descended on the evening of her first ball Sir Anthony was waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs, resplendent in sapphire-blue satin, his coat and waistcoat heavily embroidered with silver. She was already in a bad humour; her stays were too tight, her skirt was so wide as to be a danger to anyone who came within four feet of her, and her shoes were hurting her. She had not yet put on her social face, and scowled blackly at him as she reached the hall.

“My dear Miss Cunningham, how absolutely exquisite you look!” he twittered, holding his arm out to her and smiling sweetly. “I thought you might like to enter the room on the arm of someone with whom you are already acquainted, but if you think I am being too bold, please, do tell me.”

She put her hand on his arm and leaned on it while she struggled to bend down and take off her shoe, which had something sharp in it.

“Oh, this is ridiculous!” she said after a few moments of futile battling against the restrictions of her clothing. “How can it be sensible to wear clothing which render it impossible to take off one’s own shoe!”

“Allow me, my dear,” he said, kneeling in front of her and managing to take off the offending item of footwear without touching her at all. He shook it, and a small stone fell out. “There!” he said, replacing the shoe onto her outstretched foot. He stood up and offered her his arm again. “Now I would suggest, dear lady, that you also take the sharpness out of your face and replace it with a smile, however painful that may be. Although you will no doubt be besieged by young men eager to make your acquaintance, regardless of your facial expression. Money always wears a smile.”

She looked up at him.

“Does everybody know about my dowry then?” she asked.

“Of course, my dear. What do you think your cousin and your brother have been doing for the last days? Now, let us go in. I am so delighted that you chose to wear blue, and a shade which complements my own outfit so well! We will be the talk of the room.”

“Why?”

“Well, as we are already acquainted, people will assume we have dressed in the same colour deliberately, as a way of stating that we are…sympathetic to one another, shall we say?” he beamed down at her, displaying a set of perfect white teeth.

She looked at him with horror, and his smile faded slightly.

“If you wish, you can announce that it is mere coincidence, but you may prefer to use the assumption to your advantage.”

“What possible advantage could there be to me if people think we are sympathetic, as you put it, to one another?” she asked tactlessly.

“Well, when you find the constant attention and compliments a little overpowering, just signal to me, and I shall rescue you immediately. I promise not to say anything complimentary to you at all, and to pay you very little attention,” he suggested, undismayed by her obvious abhorrence of him.

She smiled, in spite of her apprehension.

“Ah, that is better. You look so beautiful when you smile…but I have promised. No more compliments. You will have a surfeit soon enough.”

“You are exaggerating, Sir Anthony,” Beth said, determined that once she was in the room she would not go anywhere near him for the rest of the evening.

“We will see,” came the reply.

REVIEW

This is going to be a review of the series.

I was given both in exchange for an honest review.

This series was complicated for me to write about. There were some excellent things. For example, the authors writing style was very fluid. The plot seemed to be solid and didn't really leave me 'wanting' lots more of unfinished business. I like books like that - that have clear cut beginning middle and ends and tie up all lose ends, or as many as possible.

What has me struggling with this series is there was just so much sex. And while I love good sex scenes I felt like these sex scenes weren't there for real purpose but just because. It felt very much inundated with them and it was just too much for me.

I've read the reviews others have posted and I can see why it has so many 5 stars. I very much can see how some readers love these types of books. And maybe it just isn't for me in that sense.

And that's okay.

Overall I'm going to give this one 3.5 Stars.

I am going to chalk up my issues to it just not being my cup of tea because the writing itself was well done.

~ EXCERPT ~
“Ally? Hey, what’s up? You got real quiet all of a sudden. Not a good quiet, either. What are you thinking?”
I shook my head. “No, it’s nothing. I get it. I understand.”
He looked at me for minute and then sighed. He got up and came around to my side of the booth and took me in his arms and kissed the top of my head. “You’ve got that look on your face. You know, the one that says you think I’m not going to be able to handle any more weird stuff and this is it for us. Huh? Admit it—it’s what you were thinking, isn’t it?” I nodded, trying to keep the tears in. “Okay, look at me.” He pulled my face up to look directly in my eyes. I could stare into his beautiful, deep brown eyes all day. “First, and most importantly, I love you, Ally. I’m in this for the long haul, no matter how freaky things get. If it means I get you, then count me in. You gotta start believing in us, babe.” He stopped to kiss me briefly and thank the waitress for refilling our coffee cups. “Secondly, you’re giving me, and all guys in general actually, way too much credit for deep thinking. When I say ‘what the hell is an oracle?’ that’s all I mean. No hidden meaning. I just want to know what it is. Guys are actually pretty simple and we tend to say exactly what we mean.” He kissed me again and then returned to his side of the table, placing a napkin in my hand so I could mop my face. Poor guy: it seems like all he ever did was watch me cry. I was such a girl. “Now let’s finish eating while you tell me all about this oracle stuff, okay?”
So I wiped my eyes and told him about how the Seer Council had tricked me into believing they were simply a group of innocent little old lady gardeners, but they actually held my fate in their hands. I told him about the last Oracle being stolen away from her people by the Gaulish clan, never to be heard from again. And I told him how the council was very interested in my abilities to see the future and seemed to think it was possible evidence of my oracle-ness or whatever. I finished with, “And they didn’t want to even let me go. They made me promise to come back over spring break and in the summer.”
“Spring break? Ah, Ally, no. I can’t stand not having our last school vacation together. You gotta tell them no, querida. I’ll probably go nuts if you’re gone.”
“Don’t worry. There is no way I’m going back over spring break. I’ll go in the summer as long as it’s while you’re gone to basic training.” I grabbed his hand across the table and rubbed my thumb over his knuckles. I told him what the council had told me about oracles, how they were messengers between worlds or something.
“Ally, what do you think? Do you think you could be this oracle?” He looked at me with concern.
“I don’t know, Jack. I think there’s a lot more to the story than what they’re telling me. I don’t trust those little old garden-seer ladies. I can’t even think about being an Oracle before I know what’s really going on.”
“That was a very Oracle-like thing to say,” he said with a laugh.
“Shut up.” I smiled. “Does this lunch include pie?”

~ EXCERPT ~

It was time to pull myself together and slink out of this bathroom to face Jack; if he was even waiting for me. He most likely lost interest and retreated back to class. I splashed water on my face and tried vainly to tame my obnoxious, curly red hair and exited the bathroom. To my surprise, Jack was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets, staring at the ground. He looked up and smiled slightly at me, one corner of his attractive mouth inching higher than the other. His big, nearly black eyes were full of concern as he asked, “You feeling better? I thought maybe you were gonna puke all over the place back there.”
Perfect. Exactly what I wanted him to think of in connection with me: the girl who looked like she was going to puke. “No, I’m fine. I needed to get away from the Wikipedia re-hash, that’s all. Thanks for the escape.” I tried to scoot by him.
He laughed a bit under his breath and reached out, gently grabbing my arm as I passed. “Hey, don’t run off. You looked really upset. I want to make sure you’re all right. Besides, Ms. Gonzalez thinks we’re at the nurse. No need to rush back for more coma-inducing book reports. I’m Jack, by the way. Jack Ruiz.” He pulled me directly in front of him and again examined my face. An intoxicating aroma wafted to me from his warm skin; a sort of warm, spicy scent that instantly became my new favorite. I might have swayed toward him a bit.
“Yeah, I know, Jack. I’ve been handing your papers back all semester.” I struggled to sound unaffected.
He nodded. “You still look really pale, Ally. And you seem a bit unsteady. Sure you’re not gonna puke?”
Really? Why me, God? I stood up straight and gently shrugged off his hand. “Yes. I had a, uh…a moment. I’m okay. Thanks for getting me out of there.” His dark eyes looked like melted dark chocolate. Life is so not fair. On the bright side, he actually knows my name. I wouldn’t have bet on that. I’m not the kind of girl who stands out—well, except for the crazy red hair—or attracts much attention. I’m short and small, wear really plain clothes, and I don’t say very much at school. I have a few good friends and we pretty much fly below the radar and try to stay out of the limelight. I like it that way. High school seriously sucks and I just want to get through it quietly and without a lot of drama. Please, God, life will be better in college.
“So, this is gonna sound pretty weird,” Jack started hesitantly, “but, uh, when it got really hot in the classroom, it, well it kinda felt like it was, uh, emanating from you.” He laughed once, quietly. “That’s crazy, huh?”
Wow. Did he just use the word “emanating” in a sentence? Who does that? I mean, in high school? I wonder what he got on his ACT? I had always had the sense there was more to him than meets the eye, and this cemented that feeling.
