Book Blogger Take 9

Would you read a book because of the Hype?

~Sighs~ I like to think I don't follow the crowd and think for myself but yes, I have to admit, I have read a select few books because of the hype. Here are a few books I read and my thoughts.

Best Book Hype - Hunger Games Series -- I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED these books!!!! I was so sad to see them end.

Biggest Disappointment Hype - Twilight -- I LOVE Vampire books and I was very anxious and excited to read these books, however, I wanted to choke Bella by the first half of book one. I read the entire series but yeah ... was just disappointed. This wasn't anything like the vamps I love from Sherrilyn Kenyon or JR Ward.

Worst Book Hype - 50 Shades of Grey -- I stopped at Chapter Ten of book three with this series, I am SHOCKED I made it this far ... I couldn't handle this at all. First, the 'fan fiction' aspect of it annoyed me to no end (as an author myself I have a lot of issues with this.) But I really felt this book lacked believability. She didn't do that type of lifestyle any justice and I just am really blah'd about it. If people want a good erotica series there are so many others out there that actually get things right and I don't see the point in reading something that leaves the wrong impression to people.

Started out GREAT and ending with a Dud - Sookie Stackhouse -- I started out LOVING this series and somewhere around book 8 it started to fizzle. I haven't read 12 or 13 and I stalled on Chapter 3 of book 11. I think she started writing for the True Blood fans and not the Sookie Stackhouse Novel fans.

So there you have it -- occasionally I am a sheep and follow the hype!

  1. Hey! I feel the same way about the books you mentioned. The only one I haven't read is 50 Shades, but I have my reasons why I don't want to read it.

    1. Hey Vonnie!
I really really wish I hadn't read 50 shades ... such a waste of time. I read your blog - You know, I am not perfect in grammar but I do have an editor that I use for my stuff...that author should have too. But let's not even forget the fact that it was FAN FICTION!!! Her character development and depth wasn't even hers! UGHH I could go on for hours....

  4. Wow, my reactions to The Hunger Games and The Twilight Saga are the complete opposite of yours! Lol. I tried to read The Hunger Games, but didn't get very far because I just don't like the whole premise of the series. As for the Twilight books, I LOVE them!! I am definitely a Twihard!

I never read erotica; I don't like EXTREMELY graphic sex in romance novels. Nor do I like such things as BDSM, or threesomes. "Fifty Shades of Grey" is totally ridiculous, even if I enjoyed the genre, though. As you point out, it simply lacks believability. I read an excerpt once, on a website, and didn't like it. Aside from the kinkiness, it just seemed that someone as naïve about sex as the female character is would never in a million years get into such a perverted relationship, and then fall in love with the guy!

As for other vamp authors I like, I can mention four: Amanda Ashley, Lynsay Sands, Christine Feehan, and Kerrylyn Sparks. I should start reading Sherrilyn Kenyon, as well. J.R. Ward, though, is not my cup of tea at all.... And I do want to start The Vampire Academy series, by Richelle Mead, as well as her Bloodlines series.

    Nice answer! Happy Reading!! :)

    1. I think I've read one short story by Christine Feehan. One of my besties keeps telling me I would love her. Haven't read of the others. See I wouldn't even call 50 Shades erotica. The sex was blah. And the whole scene where she lost her virginity - I just can't picture any young woman wanting that whens he's never had anything else. If Twilight wasn't in Bella's POV so much I would have liked it. She was just way to whiny for me. I have heard others say that about Hunger Games, what you said.

  7. I actually enjoyed Twilight, I know that it certainly wasn't a well written book but I was totally wrapped up in the series eventhough the writing was terrible LOL I'm yet to read 50 Shades but there are many negative comments so I'll leave that till I don't have much or anything in my TBR pile, which maybe awhile LOL

  8. I very much agree about your views on fifty shades of grey, I was almost embarrassed to admit to all the people I know who read them that I wasn't a fan. Everyone I know that read it loved it. I did however read them all to try and understand why the male lead was so messed up, I wish I just let it go and didn't waste my time :s
