From Rob Thomas, the creator of the television series and movie phenomenon Veronica Mars, comes the first book in a thrilling mystery series that picks up where the feature film left off.
Ten years after graduating from high school in Neptune, California, Veronica Mars is back in the land of sun, sand, crime, and corruption. She’s traded in her law degree for her old private investigating license, struggling to keep Mars Investigations afloat on the scant cash earned by catching cheating spouses until she can score her first big case.
Now it’s spring break, and college students descend on Neptune, transforming the beaches and boardwalks into a frenzied, week-long rave. When a girl disappears from a party, Veronica is called in to investigate. But this is no simple missing person’s case; the house the girl vanished from belongs to a man with serious criminal ties, and soon Veronica is plunged into a dangerous underworld of drugs and organized crime. And when a major break in the investigation has a shocking connection to Veronica’s past, the case hits closer to home than she ever imagined.
In Veronica Mars, Rob Thomas has created a groundbreaking female detective who’s part Phillip Marlowe, part Nancy Drew, and all snark. With its sharp plot and clever twists, The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line will keep you guessing until the very last page.
Review
I am a huge Veronica Mars fan. I'm a superfan. I'm a Marshmellow. And I'm proud of that.
All of that being said - it is some what hard to stay neutral when I open a book that is the continuation of a series I have loved for what, a decade? Give or take a few years.
So with that, I tried VERY VERY hard to not let my emotional attachment to characters cloud my judgement of the book.
THAT WAS VERY HARD!!!
As always, I still loved Veronica. I was captivated by Weevil's two page appearance and I begged for more Logan. Keith was awesome, of course and Mac & Wallace were top notch.
Veronica's crime solving expertise was put to the test when her *** SPOILER ***** .............. step-sister becomes kidnapped.
Long story short, Veronica has to put on her thinking cap to save the day.
If I look at this book as a reader, without the emotional attachment that I feel towards these characters I would say it's a great light fun mystery. But Alas ... Weevil and Logan's short cameo's were not enough to keep my wants at bay. I just needed more of them. It is because of that ... that I am giving this book four stars. As a long time Veronica Mars fan I just need them.
Sorry Rob Thomas, not that your writing wasn't stellar and that your plot wasn't captivating, I just NEEDED more of the two main guys!
Overall - if you have never been introduced to the world of Veronica Mars, go rent the movie, download it, love it and then pick up this book.
