Summary
When Blake Connor returns from Afghanistan, he wants nothing more than to hide from the world. He’s plagued by the memory of his best friend’s death and the pain of his own injuries. That same friend’s dying wish is just one more burden he must carry.
Jennifer Owens had expected to get married the moment her fiancĂ© returned from the war, but the news of his death changed everything. When an unexpected letter arrives a year later, it raises new questions and opens old wounds. Her search for answers leads her to Blake’s doorstep.
Although Blake seems determined to keep her at arms’ length, Jennifer recognizes the beauty that lies beneath his scars and confronts him with the truth. Nothing will ever be the same for this broken ex-Army Ranger, but he must overcome his warped self-image and emotional scars if he’s going to be the man Jennifer deserves.

How do you prepare to write romance?
There is really no preparation involved when writing a romance novel. For me, there is no amount of research that can do justice to anything I write if the emotion is foreign to me. I don’t consider myself an expert when it comes to the affairs of the heart. I solely base my writing on what I feel and what I have experienced throughout the years. A famous adage says: Write what you know. Simply stated, I dig deep and let my imagination dictate the rest.
Do you have any special things you do to get ready?
All I need to begin writing a novel is a character outline and my music playlist. Music is like air to me. It sets the mood and keeps me company while I plow away. This might come as a shock to a lot of people. Often times, I associate a particular song to the story I’m currently writing. Call me obsessive since I have the songs on repeat. The song I replayed so much while writing Pieces of Broken Time is Broken by Seether and Gravity by Sara Bareilles.
How about writing particularly dramatic scenes?
For dramatic scenes, I try to find the balance between capturing the intensity of the moment without descending too deep into melodrama and overdoing it. It’s easy to get caught in the heat of the conflict and inundate the story with unnecessary details.
