Fire & Ice Book Tours Presents: Spotlight & Giveaway: Twinkle by SK Parkinson

The richest man in the world wants to celebrate the July 4th holiday as never before. In a bid to get into the record books, a global fireworks show is staged from orbit. Satellites drop pyrotechnics into the atmosphere, thrilling everyone from the Arctic to the Antarctic with their rich colors and massive explosions in every time zone.

The next day, people around the globe begin to lose their sight. Governments crumble, society degenerates, and infrastructure falls into chaos. Humanity finds itself stumbling in the dark and losing all hope.

A few fortunate individuals retain their vision. Attempting to deal with the growing despair around them, they come together to discover the true purpose and origin of the affliction. They race to find a cure before the world is subjugated under an invading power.

Keith Hurst’s secure telephone rang, waking him from a sound sleep. He opened his eyes and looked at the LED clock on his nightstand. It said 3:12. As national security advisor to the president of the United States, middle-of-the-night calls were common. His staff did their best to filter out the less important matters until his morning brief, but there were times when an emergency forced sleep into second place.
Hurst grabbed the handset by the second ring. He had to wait for the encryption to handshake before he could say, “Hurst.”
“Good morning, sir. This is the night watch officer. We have several NSA intercepts from the following countries: India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia all placing their militaries on high alert. We’ve had sporadic reports of multiple air, car, and rail accidents, resulting in thousands of deaths. Many radio and television stations have gone off the air in those countries.”
Hurst snapped on his bedside light and sat up. “Accidents? Do we know the cause?”
“No, sir. The strange thing is, NSA claims many of the foreign military units that were signaled never acknowledged the alert. There also appears to be a major communication disruption with U.S. CENTCOM units in Afghanistan and our embassies in the aforementioned countries.”
“Are the comms being hacked, or is there some sort of natural phenomenon like sunspot interference?” Concerned about the call, Hurst looked at the empty space beside him. His wife had left him several years before, directly because of the election campaign and the late-night calls.
“No, sir. Not that we can see. The circuits are up, and the phones are ringing, but no one is answering.”
Hurst swung his legs out of bed. Has someone come up with a way to simultaneously disrupt communications with American bases, embassies, and headquarters, or is this some sort of terrorist attack? “Does NRO have anything on overhead imagery?”
“No, sir. No major troop movements in the CENTCOM area. In fact, NRO reports minimal movement overall.”
“I’ll be in the office in thirty-five minutes. I’ll want everyone in for an early brief for the president. Get the joint chiefs and SECDEF up to speed. Warn the Secret Service that we may be moving POTUS with short notice. If this is an attack, I want to stay ahead of it. See if we can get drone surveillance of any U.S. bases in Afghanistan ASAP. We need answers.”
“Yes, sir.”
Hurst hung up and hit the bedside crash button to summon his protection detail. This was no time for subtlety. He needed to be in the White House as soon as humanly possible.

Taylor tore his T-shirt over his head and tossed it onto the ground. It wasn’t very warm out, but the cotton was wet with sweat and had been clinging to his torso, chilling him more than the breeze. He stalked back toward the lump hammer and pile of wood, keeping his complaints low and muttering to himself.
“You’ve got an hour before you’re a human fence.” Josh turned away with a small smile playing across his lips. “And as amusing as that would be, I don’t fancy the hospital bill when Candy tramples all over your ass.”
Taylor frowned, speaking to his retreating uncle. “Is Candy another one of your friends, then? Like Libby?”
Josh lifted his hand, batting away the comment. “It’s a horse, dumbass. And that horse will leave hoof-shaped bruises all over you if you don’t get to work.”
Taylor’s blood boiled. He could do something as simple as fix a hole in the stupid fence. It didn’t take a genius to work it out.
Spitting mad and driven by aggression, Taylor lined up another post and whacked it into the ground with a loud roar. He raised the lump hammer again and brought it down heavy on top of the wood. His muscles protested, but he refused to give in, thumping the hammer onto the post again and again until it was firmly embedded in the dirt.
After lining up the next one, he ignored his deep gasps for breath and pounded the post into the ground far faster than the last. His groans of exertion echoed around the mountains surrounding the ranch, each rise of the hammer eliciting another deep grunt. He told himself he could do this. It was a menial task. He’d prove he was better than them all, and that he wasn’t ruled by the drug he’d used. They were wrong about him, and he’d make each and every one of them eat crow.
A light cough behind him made him spin around, his hammer stalling high in the air. His chest heaved as he fought for breath, and when his arms shook, he lowered the hammer carefully to the ground. He squinted at the approaching redhead.
“I brought water.”
Taylor waited, watching the way Libby’s green gaze drifted over his naked torso. Her cheeks were tinged a rose pink, and the water rippled in the glass, but she didn’t look away.
“Why didn’t Josh bring it out himself?”
Her brows snapped together, little lines appearing between them. “Josh didn’t send it. I saw you from the kitchen window. You looked hot.”
“Really? Good to know I do it for you.” he said, amused by the way she cringed. He waited for her to apologize or rush away, but Libby stood her ground. She looked him up and down, still holding out the water for him.
“Are you going to take this?”
He shrugged, dropping the hammer to the ground. Libby kept her eyes on him, and he took a step forward, licking his lips. “Why don’t you bring it to me?”
“Because I’m not your maid,” she said, her eyes flaring. “I came with a peace offering, hoping you’d apologize for the way you spoke to Levi. I don’t actually like you.”
Taylor took another step closer. “You don’t have to like me to appreciate the view.”
The glass hit the ground hard. Libby snarled, turned, and stalked back toward the house. He could hear her mutterings, no doubt calling him every rude name she could think of. It made him laugh, and the urge to annoy her further had him shouting at her retreating back.
“Drink me in, Blue. Lap up every damn inch of me and enjoy it while you can.”

Will Grizz be able to walk away from the one thing he swore he never wanted?

“Who the fuck do you think you are,” I yell as the large man throws me onto the bed.
“Your worst fucking nightmare, sweetie pie.”
“Just let me go, please.”
“Not happening,” he says as he sits on the bed and begins to untie his boots.
“I didn’t see anything. I don’t know names or places. Let me go. I have a very important meeting in the morning,” I beg.
“Not happening,” he replies again.
“Let. Me. Fucking. Go,” I roar, as I sling the Bible from the nightstand and nail him in the back of the head.
“Listen here, bitch, you’re now property of the Iron Sinners motorcycle club. You ain’t fucking going nowhere without one of us. Got it? You witnessed a fucking crime that could put a fellow brother away for life. You’ve been spotted with us by a rival club. You are now marked as a motherfucking Sinner. You leave our side and the Idols will put a really shiny bullet straight through your skull. You’re a walking, talking dead bitch just waiting to get popped. So shut the fuck up.”
Did I just really hear him he say property of the sinners? Bullet in my head?
“So, you’re telling me I have a ticking death threat that could expire at any given moment?”
The man stands, faces me, baring all of his ink and replies, “And I forgot to add shut the fuck up.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?”
He comes closer in an intimidating stance and bends down so we are face to face. “Does any of this read as if I were kidding you, bitch?”
His minty breath reverberates off my skin and envelops all of my senses. He was the bad guy and I, the victim, but god damn he’s gorgeous.
“Let me fucking go. I don’t care about any of that shit.”
I lunge forward off the bed, catapulting myself into his chest and begin my fight to escape. My surprise assault knocks him off balance and he falls back on the bed. I run for the door. Fuck! My bag. I take three steps back, grab my bag, and run.
Halfway out of the parking lot, I'm brought down by my hair.
“You dumb cunt. What part of my speech didn’t you get?” the man growls in my face.
He rips me up by the hair and drags me back to the room.
“I’m done playing nice. You want to run and piss me the fuck off, then you’re going to be treated like a fucking piece of trash.”

Sunday Review: The Road to Comfort by Becky Lower

Title: The Road to Comfort
Author: Becky Lower
Source: Given from the author in exchange for an Honest review

Purchase: Amazon

Juliette St. James has only done two impetuous things in her life. The first resulted in her becoming a single mother at age 18. Now, she’s embarking on a cross-country trip to celebrate becoming an empty-nester. Not sure of what she will do now that she’s flying solo, she comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare—a cowboy.

When ex-bull-rider Cyclone Kelley heads out on his horse, the last thing he expects to find is a damsel-in-distress parked alongside the road. Especially one that resembles his first crush—Brigette Bardot. He doesn’t need or want a complication in his life. His wife died while he was chasing the elusive dream of fame and fortune on the rodeo circuit. Blaming himself for her death, he quit the rodeo and returned to Nebraska. Now his mantra is “love them and leave them smiling.”

They are attracted to each other and decide a one-nighter would be a good idea. After all, what happens in Comfort, Nebraska, stays in Comfort. But when Juliette’s car gets sucked up in a tornado, she’s forced to spend a week in the town instead of just one day. While neither denies their attraction, they both realize that a week together will change the course of their lives forever. They are both forced to decide if love is worth gambling on what could be. Or if tornadoes, and cyclones, are better left alone.

Ms. Lower had a good writing style. This is the second book I have read from her. She consistently shows that her skills can stay consistent.

The Road to Comfort isn't my usual style of book but I liked the blurb so I thought I would give it a chance. I think that is the main reason I had some struggles with the story. It wasn't the writing quality or even the story line. So i don't want my lack of genre reading to hurt the potential readers who do like these types of stories on a regular basis.

I do like that Ms. Lower is consistent. Sometimes that is hard to find in authors and it is reassuring and pleasant to know there is a certain quality you will get when picking up a book.

All in all I'm giving this a solid 3 star.

Gluten Free Friday Homemade Recipe - #3 Chicken Pot Pie

Now I will confess, I have only ate this once or twice in my life but I have always wanted to make it. I don't eat it in restaurants because I never know what is going to be on the inside. So after toying with things I decided why not make it at home, I mean how hard can it be right? haha...very time consuming!

So here is what I did .... (As always, all ingredients are Gluten Free and/or Organic)

Turn the oven to 350 degrees and let it heat up . Put a stick of butter in your pan and put it in the oven during this processing.

Chop up into tiny bits:
1 Stalk of Celery
1 Stick of Carrots
1 Head of Broccoli
1 Stalk of Green Onion

Boil 4 chicken breast in water and once they are fully cooked, chop them up

Remove corn from 1 ear and include in the above mixture. Make sure you mix everything together so it isn't all clumped into 'like' items.

In a separate dish combine:

1 1/3 Cups of Flour
1/3 Cups of Gluten Free Baking Seasoning
1/3 Cup of Sugar
1 1/3 Cups of Milk

Remove the pan and make sure the stick of butter is fully melted.

Pour 1/3 cup of the liquid mixture into the baking dish.

Pour the veggies and chicken into the baking dish evenly.

Pour the remaining liquid mixture on top of the veggies and chicken. Make sure all of it is evenly distributed.

Be careful, the baking dish is hot!

Put into the oven and bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes.

This yields about 6-8 servings.

Overall I rate this a 4.5 Stars out of 5!

Ruthless People

Guest Post Topic: Would you prefer to be apart of the Italian mafia or the Irish mob and why?

I think I would like to be apart of the Italian Mafia simply because I believe they have more "swagger" I guess. To me the  italian mafia is smooth, sexy, and almost relaxed. I see them all siting pool side with glasses of wine talking about anything but what they really do. While the Irish mob kind of seem like the Sons of Anarchy. Instead of siting pool side they are either at giant barques with beers or at pub. They are brash and would most likely beat the crap out of you right there and then. While the italians would come back for you in your own house.

Now, all of this is not a statement of fact, but rather how I see it in my head. I think it the reason I see that way is because of my roommate and going home with her for thanksgiving last year gave me a real insight into her Italian family. My next goal is to learn the language more.

Taking Risks, Book #1
Secrets. They’re a bitch.
That’s how my story began.
Growing up was unconventional.
I knew I was never normal. I always wondered why.
When I found out?
I realized, I was a monster.
My whole world fell apart. Crashed. Burned. Destroyed.
... forever.
Or so I thought.
And then I met him.
He kept me safe when everyone else inflicted pain.
I knew it was out of the question. I knew we couldn’t be. It would never last.
After all, nothing good could come out of a nightmare.
But against it all, I still decided to risk … everything.

 Emily McKee

For the past 21 years, I have been a planner and an organizer. I always needed things a specific way and then everything changed for me. I've always had a vivid imagination and thoughts racing through my mind. I realized that life is way too short to let things pass me by, because in the blink of an eye everything could change. So I decided to just live in the moment, taking every chance and opportunity led my way. No second thoughts and just going with the flow.

I decided to put the fictional characters and the conversations going on in my head to paper. I know, it makes me sound crazy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I've embraced crazy and hectic and last minute because it's led me to making my dreams a reality.

When I'm not writing Happily Ever After's I'm reading about them and living one. I think this world is filled with too much sadness already we don't need to read about it as well. I write because I love it and I've allowed my imagination to run wild and be crazy and free. Just like me. ❤
