Zombies... When Abigail Collins heard Nick’s theory on their current case, she knew he had to be crazy, but when a zombie shows up in her apartment she has no choice but to believe him. A renegade necromancer bent on manipulating witches and murdering innocent people runs amok in town and Abby and Nick have to stop them before more bodies pile up. Further complicating matters two PIB agents step onto the scene, claiming a link between their case and Abby’s. To top it all off, blood starved vampires are causing chaos in the city. It’s just another day for PIB Agent Abigail
Collins, full of blood, monsters, and explosions.

A woman in a dress dress walks through the foggy forest.

"Abby?" I heard Nick's voice. I turned to find him standing behind me, also drenched from the rain. "Yeah, what are you doing here? I thought you lived on the other end of town?" "I was out and realized I needed to grab something before heading home." He shrugged. "What about you?" I took the hood of my jacket off. "Apparently I'm taking care of a lost cat until I can find the owner." His eyes widened. "A cat?" "Yes, a Sphinx. You know, a naked one." His eyes got bigger and I laughed. "He was outside in the rain, I wasn't going to leave him there." "Maybe he's your familiar." He said, "But just be cautious." I raised a brow. "He's safe and means no harm." "How do you know that?" "Because I made sure to put up a protection spell on my house last year after the Cult waltzed right in, oh and after Michelle waltzed in too. I decided it was the best type of defense." He pressed his lips together and gave me a disapproving gaze. "You never told me the Cult paid you a personal visit." Aw crap, I'd screwed up. "It doesn't matter. It wasn't any of your business anyways. The point is that they backed off." "You're just a magnet for trouble, Abigail." We walked further into the store and I had no idea why he was staying next to me, but I let it go. "Don't I know it?" I laughed. "You've gotten the mild end of it. Just wait, if Boss Man makes you shadow me much longer you could start to see the really weird shit." "For our sake, I hope we only have to partner until the end of this case. Because it's only a matter of time until your bad luck starts to rub off on me." A shriek came through the nearly empty store. Nick and I both cursed and headed towards the sound. People were running the other direction, one screamed 'vampire' as they passed us. Well, crap. Nick and I drew our guns and continued to where the people were running from. Sure enough, a vampire stood there with his lips sealed to the woman's neck. His red gaze flickered to me. "He's blood starved." I told Nick and we both moved closer. We took aim. "Let the woman go." I didn't have to technically warn the vampire, but I wanted to give him a chance. Reasoning with a blood starved vampire was kind of like reasoning with a toddler, they may not realize what they are doing is wrong and need to be told to stop. He ignored me and went back to the woman. His blond hair fell in front of his eyes and he started to turn. I didn't hesitate. I shot his leg. I couldn't shoot him in the head without risking the woman, so the leg was going to have to do. He snarled and threw the lady away. Nick went to her without me having to prompt him. The vampire turned his gaze to me and rushed me. The problem with vampires was that they moved fast. Inhumanly so. I took two more shots in hopes of slowing him down, but I ended up pinned to the floor. He bared his fangs at me. I didn't have any desire to be a meal. I brought my hand up and slammed the butt of my gun into his temple. He reared back and I scurried away and shot the moment I could. Blood and vampire brains exploded all over the floor and me. The body fell and I wiped the blood off my face and stood. "What the fuck." "Don't put your gun away Abby." Nick called. "Two more!" Seriously, two more? What the hell was going on tonight? Guest Post:

How would you make a decision that could be made by either your heart or head?

I’ve always felt that I am governed by my head but ruled by my heart. For me, this means that I look at the pros and cons of most situations to come to a tentative decision. If it’s an impersonal situation, then my head rules.

If it is a decision that has very personal implications, the final outcome will be what my heart commands.

Let me clarify, using a love relationship as an example. If I’m with someone, they are going to be ‘comfortable with themselves’, have similar values, exhibit a strong sense of right and wrong and willingness to help others, possess a good sense of humor including the ability to laugh at themselves, and have a big-heart. In other words, there are certain qualities a man must have for me to feel okay in a relationship. If those are present, love may follow. So a head decision is then followed by one made by the heart.

If we’re talking about a decision regarding my children, that’s actually more tricky. You love them, unconditionally, yet there are times you must make a decision with your head even when your heart is screaming at you. These are the gut-wrenching choices that we must make as parents. I’ve been prepared to make them, even though there have been times when I hate the decision. This has everything to do with guiding a child or young adult into a world with tough choices and challenges, and nothing to do with what feels good. To let my heart rule in all cases involving my children would be a disservice to them.

The end analysis is that each situation is different. For me, I must look at the whole picture, not just how I feel this moment, today, or this week. Sometimes it’s the head and sometimes the heart.

I think of the lyrics in a Mary Chapin Carpenter song. “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug…”

You do the best you can. I guess that’s life.

EXCERPT:
I wipe my hands on my dress, staring at the numbers 806 on the gold metal plate. This is it, Audrey. You’ll walk in that door a girl and eventually come out a woman.
“I’m such a loser,” I mumble to myself, and twist the doorknob.
A man hops up from the love seat when I enter. He has dark hair and a defined, closely shaved jaw. He’s handsome, definitely not smelly or gross, and strangely familiar.
“Have we met before?” I blurt, trying to place him.
“Um… I don’t think so,” he says, flashing a heart-stopping smile. His eyes meet mine and they’re bluer than blue. Henry Cavill.
“Oh, I saw you going up the elevator last week.”
“Right. Of course, I remember that,” he says with an even brighter smile. Adorable dimples appear on his cheeks. He holds out his hand. “You were loitering in the lobby. I’m Graham.”
I remember why I’m here and my face burns, surely, turning bright red. I take his hand anyway and say, “Audrey.”
“Right.”
“Right,” I repeat feeling like an idiot.
“Would you like to sit down?” he asks.
“I guess so, thanks.” I take the same spot as the other day but this time I sit in the middle, hoping he doesn’t try to sit next to me. What am I doing here?
Graham sits across from me and says, “I know this is all new for you, but please don’t be uncomfortable. Dr. Markson has told me all about your situation and I just want to help. I think together we have a really good chance of defeating your anxiety.”
His speech is so sincere and he’s giving me the most empathetic smile. I want to die of humiliation. Covering my face with my hands, I groan. “Oh God, this is so embarrassing.”
“Why?”
“Because you know I’m a defective misfit; and you’re here to help me with something I never share with anyone. Like ever, yet you’re just talking about it like its normal.”
“It’s your normal,” he says.
“Yeah. Whatever.” I cross my arms over my chest and nervously look around the room, anywhere but at him. I notice a small black journal on the coffee table. “What’s that?”
“Those are our instructions and guidelines for the day.” He picks the book up, and says, “Want me to read them?”
My stomach burns from anxiety. I want run from the room and never look back. “I guess we may as well see what this is all about.”

Excerpt:

Finn exhaled forcefully, like he had been holding his breath for a long time. I looked into his electric-blue eyes and saw nervousness melt to relief.

He squeezed my hand. “I could wait forever for you or take this as slow as you need as long as I know that you are here with me. I just needed to know that you are as committed to giving us a chance as I am.”

I smiled at him, a little bit of wickedness playing across my lips.

I placed my hand on his left shoulder and slowly it brushed across his chest to his right shoulder. His eyes began to glow, and then they darkened to a deeper blue. Hmm, it wasn’t only my eyes that changed. Good to know.

“You could wait forever, could you?” I taunted in a husky, low voice.

“Ugh,” he grunted.

I laughed, taking in his tortured expression and tense muscles.

“You are a little evil,” he rasped.

“No, baby. I promise I’m very good, and I don’t want to wait forever. Just a little bit longer,” I whispered.

“Get your sexy ass in the car before I toss you in the back seat and say the fuck with waiting,” Finn growled.

I licked my lips and thought about taunting him a little more, but the flash of his eyes signaled the end of his self-control. I scrambled into the passenger’s seat and buckled up.

Finn waited in the same spot for a long moment. He shook his head like he was clearing out an image and walked around the car, chuckling. “Good choice, but the other way could have been more fun.”

“Oh, it will be. Just not tonight,” I promised.

EXCERPT:

I head down to the gift shop, hoping and praying it’s not full of people. Luckily, it’s empty because the lunch session is still going on in the main ballroom.

I search the shop for condoms but can’t find them anywhere. They have everything else; toothbrushes, combs, aspirin, shower caps, tampons, toothpaste.

The young woman working the cash register sees me searching the store like I’m on some type of scavenger hunt.

“Can I help you?” she asks.

The woman is in her twenties and has reddish-blond hair that hangs in loose waves several inches past her shoulders. She has huge breasts and is wearing a short black dress that shows off her long legs. I’m just guessing here, but I would say she’s probably not a virgin. Which means she’s likely found herself in need of condoms before and wouldn’t judge me for buying them at a hotel.

I go up to her and speak softly. “Do you sell condoms here?”

She looks surprised. I’m suddenly offended. Do I look like someone who would never need condoms? I’m no beauty queen but I’m not exactly ugly.

“We keep them back here.” She reaches under the register and opens a drawer. “How many do you need?”

How many do I need? How many does she think I need?

“Um, just one.”

She gives me a strange look. “They come in packs of three or more.”

“Oh, okay. Three is good.”

“Do you want ribbed, flavored, sensitive, extra sensitive, for her pleasure, glow in the dark?”

I had no idea there were so many different types of condoms. I’ve never actually shopped for condoms.

She continues. “For flavored we have cherry, citrus, grape—”

“No. Just plain. No flavors. No glow in the dark. No ribbing.”

“So do you want sensitive? Extra sensitive? For her—”

I hear people starting to leave the ballroom, coming out into the lobby.

“I don’t know. Just give me whatever. It doesn’t matter.”

“For her pleasure.” She holds the package up and smiles. “Why should guys have all the fun, right?” She punches something in the register. “Should I charge it to your room?”

I imagine myself giving the accounting department at work a copy of my hotel receipt with a charge for condoms on it. I’m sure it would just say ‘gift shop’ but with my luck, you never know.

“I’ll just pay with cash. How much is it?”

“With tax, it’s $10.59.”

“For three condoms?”

She shrugs. “The hotel jacks up the price. When people are desperate, they’ll pay anything.”

I search my wallet, which is full of ones for some reason. She notices and looks away. Great. Now she probably thinks I work at a strip club.

People from the conference are starting to linger and talk outside the gift shop. I count my money and find that I only have nine ones. That’s it. I hand her my credit card but she doesn’t take it.

“Sorry, but our machine is down. It’s cash only or I can charge it to your room.”

“I only have $9. I have to run to the ATM. I’ll be right back.” As I’m closing my wallet, my change spills out and goes all over the floor. I bend down to pick up the scattered pennies, nickels, and dimes.

“Let me help you with that.” I look up and see Brad picking up the change.

Shit! What is he doing here? Where did he come from?

“Thanks, but you don’t need to help,” I say, urging him to leave.

He picks up the last penny. “I think we got it all.”

We both stand up and he gives me the change.

“Are we still meeting for drinks tonight?” he asks.

Cashier girl is observing the scene and I feel her staring. I glance over and see her checking Brad out. I’m sure she can tell from my blushing face that he’s the reason I need the condoms. She smiles at me, as if reassuring me that Brad is worth the ridiculous price they charge for them.

“Yeah. I’ll see you then. I’ve gotta go.” I race out of the gift shop.

As I’m leaving, cashier girl calls after me. “What about your stuff? Are you coming back with your money?’

I ignore her and hurry back to my room. The whole scene was fate telling me not to do this. I’m not ready. Or Brad’s the wrong guy. Something’s wrong. Buying condoms should not be that hard!
