Secret Cravings Publishing Fellow Author: Guest blogger: Janet Gibbs

How did So Much More evolve?
This story came from history.  I’ve always loved the idea of stepping back into another time and place and seeing the world from that perspective.  My love of history combined with my devotion to women’s history brought So Much More to life.  About twenty years ago I’d been part of an amazing group of scholars, teachers, professors and historians who had discovered original research on notable women from New Jersey.   I found an incredible woman from Morristown, Alison Turnbull Hopkins, who had been a debutante and society bride in 1902 and eventually become a radical suffragette with Alice Paul. (another NJ notable NJ woman!).  All this fed my imagination and I wanted to create a life behind the façade of balls and debutantes and marriages at the turn of the last century in a small quiet town.
As I researched I discovered a town of hidden millionaires.  There was more money and mansions in Morristown at the turn of the last century than there were in Newport, Rhode Island!  I found this astounding and was determined to discover who these families were.  My work led me to financiers, importers, bankers and investors.  Most lived tucked away in huge stone mansions on mountains in Somerset County or at the end of tree lined drives in Morristown.    A few of these homes still exist and some have been converted to nursing homes or offices.  Their facades remain holding secrets of the families who lived there.   My discovery of so many famous names fired my imagination to think of the role of women at the turn of the last century.   Few had lives of their own, being handed from father to husband at their weddings.  Their days filled with fashion, babies and gossip. A few did good works for the community or worked for the poor or the rights of women but they were only a small percentage.
I wanted to give voice to three women from three different perspectives.  Thus Alice, Francesca and Claire appeared.  They came to life through their mansions and families.  Each one was a totally different version of the woman of the early 20th century.
Alice was named after Alison Hopkins.  Though Mrs. Hopkins was devoted to women getting the vote, Alice was passionate about art.  She needed to create and paint and immerse herself in canvas, oils and watercolors.  In choosing a career over a man she went against everything Morristown revered.  Her widowed father only wanted the best for her and was convinced a steady, reliable young man would guide her back toward a ‘normal’ life.
Francesca is a mystery.  I’d always loved this name and needed to make her character equal to her tempestuous, exotic nature.   She has a secret and that makes her seductive to men and a threat to women.  Her mother is a beauty who has instilled in her only child the importance of knowing your strengths and not allowing others to curtail your individuality.   Mother and daughter are seen as unusual and not the norm in this staid community.   Francesca’s father is equally strong willed and charming and has an import business which offers a foreign intrigue to their family dynamic.  Francesca wants to prove a point about her life, she is dismissed from Morristown society, but she knows her secret will elevate her to a position none of the other families can equal.
Claire is a down to earth horsewoman.  She doesn’t suffer fools gladly and speaks her mind.  She is much more comfortable in her stable than at a ball or afternoon tea.  Though she can dress the part and follow the unwritten rules of society, she only wants to ride and have a stable of her own.     Claire has three sisters and her father is determined to have them all launched into society and married.  He has no patience with women who think they know what they want, he knows better.
During that summer in Morristown a young English aristocrat arrives to recover from a wound he received in the Boer War.  He only wants to rest at his cousin’s house and the last thing on his mind is finding a wife.   He is introduced to all the beauties of town at a summer party but finds himself attracted to a delicate blond beauty and an exotic dark haired worldly woman.  My idea for William Barret came from an old photograph of an unknown young man sitting in a photographer’s studio in evening dress.  His face was strong and yet innocent.  He seemed to draw me into creating a life for him beyond this photo.  I often find myself wondering if he would be happy in the life I created for him.
I studied literature and history at American University and have combined these two passions in my writing.  My special passion is for women in Greenwich Village from 1910 to 1920 when free love, free thinking and freedom were on the firing line.   These special, intriguing women artists, writers, sculptors, politicians and activists fired my imagination every time I read another biography.  When I walked the streets of Greenwich Village I felt them walking next to me urging me to tell their stories and what happened to them.
As my education continued to a Masters and eventual Doctorate my love for women’s history grew.  My dissertation was a critical biography of the rise and fall of Zona Gale, a women from the Midwest who became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1921.  She was on the cutting edge of women in journalism, poetry, drama, the occult and literature.   Gale was a prolific writer and well-loved and popular in American from 1905 to 1930.  Though she is not remembered today, she was one of the women who broke with a secure, quiet life in Wisconsin to seek her destiny in New York City and eventually follow her star to a writing career.
So Much More could be seen as the pre-quel to my other novels of women who would spring from towns like Morristown.  As the 20th century evolved, women took hold of their lives by force and  forged a place for themselves at the table.   Claire, Francesca and Alice were all forerunners of today’s strong women, still looking for a place in the world and fighting for their right to be at that table we call life.

Excerpt Two from Chapter Seven of So Much More by Janet Gibbs – 1, 098 words
William stood and gasped. Francesca Dunbar was obviously used to this reaction. She thoroughly enjoyed seeing men catch their breath when they saw her. Her hair was softly caught at the back of her neck and she wore a pale blue flowing dress which outlined her tapered waist and emphasized her elegant neck. Huge pearl earbobs danced as she came toward them.
Clearly aware of the power her presence had, her eyes sparkled at the effect she had on him. Though she dressed like a gentile lady she had a look of danger which both repelled and excited William. She walked slowly to the chaise and lay like a fallen swan on its faded silk damask. Her arms rested on its wooden frame and her body languished on the entire length.
“May I have some wine, Papa?” He brought her a crystal goblet and she took a sip and let her tongue run over the rim of the glass.
She turned to William and smiled slightly. "Tell me, Mr. Barrett, what did you do in the war? I hear you were wounded."
"Yes, I was hit with a bullet fragment in the leg. Nothing too serious, but enough to send me home. I lost my best friend, it has been hard to recover. I thought a change of scenery would do me good.
"You must have your hands full with this house and the garden. We English pride ourselves on our gardens, they are sometimes more important than the house itself," William said, turning to Mr. Dunbar.
Making small talk was not William's favorite thing to do but it kept him from staring at Francesca as she sipped her drink. She smiled obliquely in his direction, as if she were waiting for her father to leave.
"Yes, it does keep me busy but my wife, Delphine, is a wonderful organizer and she takes care of the house. Ah, here she is now.”
A beautiful, elegant woman entered the room like a warm wind.
Standing immediately, William gave a slight bow to the woman who looked like the portrait in the hall. She spoke first. “Good afternoon, Mr. Barrett. Francesca told me you were joining us for tea.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Dunbar, it was most kind of you to extend your invitation.”

Delphine took his hand and placed her other on top of his. Her touch was warm and comforting. Her voice was soft with a hint of an accent. “It is so rare to have an Englishman in our midst.”
William could not deny the charm of Delphine Dunbar, she was a lady but with a hint of seduction beneath her gaze, not unlike her mysterious daughter.
Paul Dunbar stood and walked to his wife’s side. He kissed her cheek and said, “Now, I'm afraid you will have to excuse me. I have an appointment in town and I'm late as it is."
William shook his hand. "Do sit down, please make yourself at home. I'm sure my wife and daughter will take good care of you." Leaning to his daughter, he kissed the top of her head and walked down the steps to the stables.
Paul Dunbar was a powerful man, large boned with broad shoulders, a master of his world as he walked through the garden edged in tightly cropped boxwood and fragrant roses.
"Papa is so sweet." Rising, Francesca smoothed her gown and looked at her mother. “Mama, I think I will take Mr. Barrett to see the rest of our house."
The lovely woman sitting at her daughter’s side nodded slightly and reached for a cup of tea. “By all means, please enjoy your visit. Be sure to see me before you depart.”
William nodded. "Yes, of course, Mrs. Dunbar.”
As the two made their way through the salon, he caught the scent of jasmine surrounding Francesca as she led him into the salon once again. They stopped by a table laden with sculpture. One particular piece took his eye. It showed a young girl holding a small vase, inclining her head shyly at the observer. Her face looked familiar and he realized it was Francesca.
"Do you recognize me?"
William nodded and pointed to another.
"Yes, these are all of me. When father and I travelled to the orient he had several people sculpt me. I think they're quite true to form, don't you?"
William wondered if this was part of her game. He realized he was sweating and pulled his collar from his neck.
Francesca had an alarming way of making him feel uncomfortable and yet familiar at the same time. He just couldn’t figure it out.
Her fingers were long and tapered and she used them to emphasize her thoughts just like his father did when he was giving William one of his many lectures. He did like to advise his son about life, especially women. There had been rumors about the duke and his conquests but William had never paid them much attention. No doubt those people were just rumor mongers intent on getting customers for their papers. However, nagging doubts sometimes entered his mind when he would see his father dash out in the evening and not return for several days. William had never felt neglected, his nannies and governess made sure of that, but as a young man he wondered about his father and of the stories that began to circulate amongst his friends. They had a habit of talking together and then stopping when he entered his club or on the polo field. No one ever said anything to his face, they were gentlemen, after all. But it didn’t stop William from wondering, if some of the stories were true.
“William, William, did you hear me?”
Francesca’s voice became more insistent as William came back from his daydreams and realized he’d been rude to his hostess.
“I’m so sorry, Miss Dunbar, my mind must have floated back to England for a moment. A credit to your ability to make one feel relaxed and at home.” Satisfied that he had assuaged her worry, he followed her down a long hall to a formal dining room. The ceiling was painted in the style of Versailles with cherubims and beautiful women adrift in ethereal clouds.
“What a magnificent painting, I’ve seen similar in the great houses of England.” William walked around the mahogany dining table with its twenty-four matching chairs, running his fingers along the smooth wood as he stared at the oil paintings and massive crystal chandelier.

Secret Cravings Author: L. Marie brings you Take My Hart: Hart Brothers 1

Take My Hart: Hart Brothers 1

By L. Marie

Erotic Contemporary Romance Short Story

She had thought she’d lost him seven years ago. But he walked back into her life…and into

her bed.

Shelby Detweiler had thought she’d gotten over Brandt Hart. Time had healed her broken

heart. But a chance meeting in her office throws her off kilter and Brandt is there to steady her.

She wants to trust him, to believe he’s relationship material once again. Soon passions flare but

will she get burned?

Seven years earlier, a night of drinking and infidelity had destroyed his relationship with the

woman he loved. Years later, he strolled into her office with business on his mind. But being

close to her is enough to rock his world. Several sizzling moments in her office rekindles the fire.

He wants her back.

Will an evening of passion drive them back into each other’s arms? Or will the flame blow

out forever?

For the tenth time in the last five minutes, Shelby Detweiler checked her reflection in the

full-length mirror. Nothing had changed. She was still wearing the same Donna Karan suit jacket

and matching skirt in the shade of soft peaches. A silk, black tank top peaked from underneath

the blazer. The fabric lay cool and light against her porcelain skin. Long, mahogany brown locks,

held at the nape of her neck with a hair tie, fell over her shoulder and cascaded down her ample

chest. Black, four-inch, Nine West heels added to her five-foot, seven-inch frame and

complemented her shapely legs.

With a hearty sigh, she turned away from the mirror and paced her office. She glanced down

to the floor. Nope, she hadn’t worn a path in the plush, tan carpeting. A nervous laugh bubbled

up her throat.

Why am I acting like such a child? At the age of twenty-seven, she was beyond her college

days. But those college days had scarred her, destroying her faith in relationships and men in

general. Damn Brandt Hart all to hell! He had been her first—and last—true love. Her heart

thudded hard against her breastbone. Any thought of him sent her pulse racing and her stomach

summersaulting. No other man had the ability to fluster her so. She had dated in the past, but no

one was Brandt.

But he had burned her.

They had talked about a future together. Marriage. Children. Then, he had slept with Dina.

He had claimed he had gotten drunk at a party with a bunch of his teammates and the

Haydensburg University cheerleaders and one thing had led to another. After, Dina had spread a

rumor that Brandt had been the father of her child. Turned out to be a lie, but the damage had

already been done.

Shelby had finished the semester at HU then transferred to another college. But she had

never truly moved on. Brandt had still had an iron grip on her heart. She could deny it, but what

was was. Nothing fazed the feeling she had once had—still had—for him.

Damn him!

And in about five minutes, he would be strolling back into her life. Not permanently, but she

would see him again, and a flood of emotions would swallow her in their depths. She’d want

him. Both mentally and physically. She would fight, and she would likely lose the battle.

Secret Cravings Publishing Presents: the Para-Portage of Emily by Muffy Wilson

The Para-Portage of Emily
The Shadow Seduction Series
By
Muffy Wilson
@SexyMuffyWilson

Emily Macque, a young, beautiful junior partner in her father’s law firm, is but a heartbeat away from love or destiny. Duty brings Emily to a frozen Island estate two hundred and fifty miles north of Chicago. Devotion requires she delve into the property history to settle an estate probate. Death lures her into the arms of the shadows seduction created by the flickering light and dark shadows.

What flames the timeless passions spanning the decades? Love, desire or obsession?

Colin Jorgenson, once a Great Lakes mariner, is a strong man haunted by love and loss. How long will he return each night, gripped by desire, hoping to find the woman he has loved for a century?

Beneath the pristine Island beauty, passions hungered, lingered in the ardent darkness. His passions, fueled by decades of loneliness and longing, could no longer be denied. Will they face eternity together or love in secret as dark things are to be loved between the shadows and the soul?
I just finished The Para-Portage of Emily. Quite the page-turner!!
I was gifted a free copy by the author and found it to be a cleverly woven plot with descriptive characters you won’t soon forget. I’m not one to give out spoilers,
but if you like paranormal intrigue, hot romance, and mystery, you will love it. Looking forward to more works by Muffy Wilson as I’m sure they will be just as brilliant.

“Tell me what you know about Mariner’s Maiden please, Kirby.”
Kirby took a long draw on his beer before he began his narrative.
“It was years ago, around 1800 Miss Emily, when the original land owner arrived on the Island with settlers from Norway. He’d claimed five hundred acres on this southern point of the Island for himself. He became wealthy in cattle, wheat, timber and cheese. As his family grew and were educated on the Mainland, they moved, one by one, off Island. They were a wealthy, hard-working lot, but needed less and less of the acreage they owned. Much of the original plot was donated to the Town throughout the years. Some sections were sold.
“It got down to the last hundred acres when Colin Jorgenson bought the property, around 1890 or 1900. I am not exactly sure. The main house was much smaller and less grand than it is now, for sure.
“Now, Colin was a Maritime Captain and often he’d be gone for months at a time. He sailed the Great Lakes several times a year with supplies, spices, fancy goods and ‘fortunes of bounty’. That’s what they called it then. It was for sale to rich settlers throughout the Great Lakes. He’d earned all his wealth in trading by the turn of the century. He came and went for several years until, in his mid-thirties, he met and married a much younger woman, Amalya, and came back to the Island with her.”
Kirby sat back, drained his beer and continued. “The property was called Mariner’s Cove then. He spent two years with Island tradesmen rebuilding this house for his wife. To honor her, and before his return to the water, he commissioned a maritime woodcarver to create the figurehead of Amalya you saw yesterday on the tree marking the entrance.
He had the figure of Amalya mounted on the bow of his ship and apparently felt she was always with him in his travels. She died one summer, pregnant with their first child, shortly after his returning from his last trip of the season. He shut himself away in this house—a broken man, left forlorn and alone, to die years later of a broken heart as a recluse. It’s said he returns night after night trying to find his Amalya, his beloved.”
“But that’s just old folklore, Miss Emily, there’s nothing to it but made up stories from the past by gossips and romantics. This place has never been haunted—no one has ever said it was, anyway. Even though he was long dead, this property was held in Old Colin’s estate until your uncle bought it around 1955, I think. I suppose there is more you can find out at the Archives office in the Island library at the town offices, if you want. That’s about all I know and it ain’t much.”
Refusing a second beer, Kirby was off to finish his chores. “Thank you, Miss Emily,” Kirby said as he stood to leave.
Emily walked him to the door with Barkley in tow.
“Oh, there is one more thing” he added. “There is supposed to be a crypt on the property somewhere. I heard tell that Old Colin buried his Amalya in there and when he was dying, he crawled into it to die on her casket. Creepy, but no one’s ever found it to my knowledge—and between me and my dad, we’ve covered this property as caretakers for over fifty years.”
Emily extended her hand in gratitude for the information and company. “Thank you, Kirby. All of that is so very interesting. He must have been deeply in love with Amalya.”
Kirby, a middle-aged man, stood and shook Emily’s hand. He turned to leave, stopped and dropped his head as he hesitated at the bottom of the steps. A simple country man, this time was no different.
“Miss Emily…” He looked up at her rather sheepishly, and stuttered slightly, “Forgive me, Miss Emily, if I offend you. I have been a bachelor all my life and never had a way with women or much of a need for them. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I like ‘em well enough, but I never was able to pick the right words in their presence. If…if you don’t mind my saying…you look an awful lot like those paintings in the house of Miss Amalya.”
“Oh my word, Kirby, how you flatter me! It is purely a coincidence, I assure you.” Emily smiled, as she dismissed the compliment and waved good-bye at Kirby. As he left, she thought about the love shared between these two remarkable people, Colin and Amalya. Amalya and Colin.
She had forgotten to ask what became of the baby…

This is a story to savor. Ms. Wilson's descriptions are poetic and enthralling,
placing the reader in the midst of the story, and the relaxed pace of the story does not lessen the power of suspense. Shrouded in mystery, romance, and eroticism, "The Para-Portage of Emily" is a treat for the senses,
a haunting indulgence. Despite hints throughout, the ending still surprised me, and though satisfied,
I regretted the literary journey's end. Highly recommended. I look forward to more from this promising series. ~ By Jordan Stringfellow

Should John Grisham and EL James have a secret love child, she would no doubt pen legal thrillers with a luscious layer of the erotic. They would name their child Muffy Wilson and send her to Stephen King for some pointers in the paranormal.
Wilson, in the obliquely titled "The Para-Portage of Emily", interweaves these three diverse genres into a compelling, magic carpet of a novel that takes Emily Macque from Chicago to a bitter island estate two hundred miles north in the frozen sea. Emily is the striking junior partner in her father’s law firm, her mission, to settle the probate on an estate, her destiny to fall into the arms of Colin Jorgenson, a seaman haunted by a past love that torments his life.
Intelligent, well-written, with fully fleshed out characters and a story with more twists than a spiral staircase, "The Para-Portage of Emily" had me gripped until the very last page.

Spotlight: Secret Cravings Author, Eva Lefoy, Rekindling the Flame

Rekindling the Flame by Eva Lefoy (@eva_lefoy) out now from Secret Cravings Publishing

Sometimes love needs a second chance.

Travel and work take a toll on Marcy and Paul’s marriage, bleeding the passion out of a once loving relationship. One day, Paul decides he’s had enough. He takes Marcy on a weekend trip to rekindle their romance and won’t take no for an answer.

Marcy’s sick and tired of Paul’s constant travel and the wedge it drives between them. Depression skyrockets her weight, so she’s surprised when Paul wants between her thighs all weekend – over and over again. Can she put aside her fears and reach for what she wants so badly before this second chance at love slips right out of her hands?

Excerpt:

After hiking a few miles through trees and mud and ferns, he spread out the blanket in a nice soft, secluded spot, laid her on it and plopped down next to her. Rolling onto his side, he kissed her, his tongue delving deep into her mouth. She locked her lips around his tongue and sucked. Down below, her panties grew moist as Paul speared her mouth repeatedly and moaned. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and tugged him closer. God, she’d missed this.

Seconds later, he pulled his lips from hers. “Take your shirt off.”

She gasped “Here? What if somebody sees us?”

Paul raised one eyebrow. “We didn’t see one person on the way in, and besides, I don’t care. I want you. Here, now.” His dark fingers went to work on the buttons of her shirt. When he had them all undone, he spread the material wide. His hands slid below the fabric of her bra to palm her ample breasts.

Marcy was already embarrassed, but somehow the daylight and the unusual circumstance had her sweating bullets. How long had it been since they’d made love with the lights on, much less au natural? She desperately wished she was skinnier. Paul’s hands slid her bra down and she laid her own hands over his, stopping him. “Paul, I’m not sure about this.”

“Shh. I love your breasts this big. Let me see them.” He reached behind, unhooked her bra and slipped it off. Her creamy, large breasts spilled out, the nipples semi-hard. She felt naked, exposed. But when his large hands covered them and squeezed, some of her nervousness ebbed.

He lowered his mouth and sucked on one, then gave it a little bite. The scrape of his teeth tightened the bud and sent tingles from her breast to her pussy. He nibbled again, then gave the other nipple the same attention.

“Paul.” Oh God, her pussy was already wet. She opened her legs and writhed underneath his possessive caress.

“Yes, baby. I want you to touch your breasts. Hold them, squeeze them while I get us undressed.”

She gulped and put her hands on her breasts. “Like this?”

“Yeah. Pinch the nipples. Harder.” Paul took his shirt off and tossed it aside, revealing a taut six-pack stomach. How the hell he kept in such great shape while on the road she didn’t know. Her man was as gorgeous today as the day she’d married him.

Welcome .... VL Locey
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Thank you Ashley for having me here!

There are few things more enjoyable than sitting down with friends. I got to do just that recently with the stars of my erotic sports romance, Pink Pucks & Power Plays, the first book in the To Love a Wildcat series. Given that Alain has a rather severe dislike of the press and/or interviews, I wasn`t sure he would agree, but my gal Viv finagled the handsome young D-man into meeting me.

We arranged for the interview to take place at The Black Boar Bar & Grill, a popular eatery and sports bar a few blocks from The Houseman Arena where the Philadelphia Wildcats play. Alain is one of several `Cats who own a share of the trendy meeting place. I picked the table by the small stage in the large dining area. Rumor has it Philly sports stars perform here on occasion, but I`ve yet to see it. Maybe someday I`ll catch a performance by a Wildcat or two.

The hot spot was rather quiet, as it was after the lunch crush. There were televisions filling every available inch of wall space that wasn`t covered with sports memorabilia. As a friendly young waiter dressed as a referee delivered my decaf, I saw the couple arriving.

"Alain!" the few lingering patrons shouted as if we were at Cheers. Lessard smiled at his fans, slapping backs as well as shaking hands as he followed Viviana to the table. I smiled at the woman. She was, as she always is, vibrant. Her clothes were sexy, colorful and playful, accenting her legs and her breasts, for she knows how much her lover admires them. Viv and I bussed cheeks. We`re the same height and possess the same curvy form so seem to feel an affinity for each other. Alain enveloped me in a brotherly hug. My eyes grew wide. I peeked at Viviana. She smiled. Alain released me to pull the chair out for his lady love.

"Thank you for doing this, Alain," I said as he hurried to push my chair in for me.
"It is my pleasure," the Quebecer said as he dropped his well made frame into his seat. I could easily see what Viv saw in Alain. Six foot two, one hundred and ninety pounds, black curly hair, hazel eyes, athletic build, and a mouth that begs to be kissed. I`d be drawn like a moth to a flame as well! "This is not like a regular interview."

"See, not all interviews are bad," the sassy brunette said as she ran her eyes over the menu. Alain rolled those pretty hazel eyes playfully. His hand rested on the back of Viviana`s chair possessively. "Let`s get a fish dinner then split it." Viviana looked at me with eyes the color of white grapes. Her eyes always amaze me. I nodded at the suggestion. After the order was placed and Viv and Alain`s drinks were brought out, we started chatting.

"So, how does it feel to be the stars of your own book?" I asked the couple.
"I`m tickled to be the first of the Wildcats women`s story that you told," Viviana said then sipped at her raspberry flavored water.

"It is very nice," Alain answered tactfully.

"He`s not always so tight-fisted with his words," Viviana pointed out as our appetizers arrived.
"Oh, I`m well aware of how he can talk once he`s comfortable," I replied with a wink for the hockey star. His mouth curled into a shy smile. "Although you do seem to have the lion`s share of the dialog in the book, Viv."

"Yes, see, chaton, I don`t talk much because you are doing all the talking for us both," Alain joked. "I cannot fit the words in edge like."

"Oh pooh on both of you." Viviana dipped a mozzarella stick into some red sauce then offered the first bite to Alain, her left hand cupped under the dripping stick. "It`s hot," she warned. Probably so he didn`t burn those lips of his she is so keen on kissing.

"Speaking of sex," I said as I dipped my own stick. Both my characters eyes widened with surprise. "Were you two pleased with the amount of it in your book?"

"Is there such a thing as too much sex?" Viviana asked with a impish gleam in her eye.
"It was very nice," Alain responded. I suspected that was his stock reply whenever he felt the matter was too personal to discuss. It was better than being told it was none of my business.

"The sex was wonderful," Viv interjected as she fed Alain the rest of the cheese stick. "I do love a juicy read, and this story certainly is that!"

"But there was more than the sex, no?" Alain said after dabbing sauce off his mouth with his napkin."The sex, it was great, but the lesson my Viviana learned, that was big importance too, was it not?"

I looked pointedly at the woman trying to decide which mozzarella stick to chose for herself. "Was it, Viviana?" I asked directly. Her eyes flicked to me then returned to the basket holding our appetizers. The patrons hooted at an old replay of a Stanley Cup game on one of the TV sets.

"Can we talk about the sex instead?" Viv inquired.

"No, we are talking about all the book, not just the steamy sex scenes," Alain hurried to say. I leaned back into my seat, nibbling the scalding hot stick carefully, my napkin held under my chin. "So, did you learn a lesson, Viviana?"

"Yes, I learned a lesson! Does that make you both happy?! For goodness sake, one would think I was Dr. Doom or something!" she huffed as she made a grab for a stick in the bright red plastic basket. Alain grabbed her hand, raised it to his lips and then laid it on the table beside Viviana`s plate. Then he chose a stick to feed her. I shifted around in my chair, suddenly quite uncomfortable. It felt as if I were watching the lovers in their bedroom. I smiled at a man eating his lunch behind us.
"What did you learn?" I asked when the sensual stick feeding was over with. "And for the record, we all adore you Viviana," I added, for it was the truth. Sure, Viv could be rather brusque at times, but her heart was most generally in the right place.

"I learned that we should talk about one of the other ladies in the series. Let`s chat about the rest of the books! I`m sure your readers would like to know a bit about those instead of hearing more about the poor choices silly old me has made."

I let her have that victory. She was far too clever to wrangle into such a private confession. She had been a reporter after all. Viviana Land had lots of pride, and chutzpah. I didn`t wish to push either her or Alain too far.

"Alright, let me see. The next book will be A Most Unlikely Countess."

"Look at that dreamy look," Alain teased. I felt the heat creeping into my face. "Ah poor V. L., she does so love goalies."

"Okay, yes, I do have a thing for goalies. Everyone knows that." I hurried to grab my coffee to hide behind. Viviana patted my arm while laughing at my discomfort.

"It`s fine, " Viv assured me. "A woman would have to be dead and buried not to be swept off her feet by Veikko Aho. He is perhaps one of the most classically handsome men I have ever laid eyes on."
"Ahem!" We both looked at Alain with his arms now folded over a tee that read 'Old Time Hockey' and featured the Hanson Brothers from the movie, Slapshot.

"Aside from you of course, darling." Viviana patted his muscular bicep.

I hurried to carry on lest more male ego was trampled. "After A Most Unlikely Countess will be O Captain! My Captain!, Reality Check, and Language of Love. I`m also toying with a few ideas for other Wildcat books, but we`ll see how things hatch with the planned five before I count chickens."

"I for one hope they do well. If women knew just how sexy hockey players are, they`d flock to grab those books." Viviana leaned back to give the server room to place her half a fish dinner. My mouth watered when my plate of flaky flounder, thick steak fries, and a side of coleslaw was set in front of me. Alain was eating rare steak with a fat baked potato that was topped with sour cream and chives. I guess the players get tired of chicken.

"I can`t argue that point," I said then waggled an eyebrow. Alain smiled self-consciously.
"He does humble well," Viviana whispered as she passed the ketchup bottle to me. The meal progressed pleasantly. We chatted about small things. Alain seemed to relax completely by the time dessert was brought out. We each had a small dish of ice cream. Mine was vanilla, Alain`s fudge ripple, and Viviana`s black raspberry.

"So, can I ask a question?" Alain said as we enjoyed our frozen treats. I nodded. "How do the Wildcats do in our quest for Lord Stanley`s cup?"

"Oh no you don`t!" I shook my spoon at the charmer, "You`re not wheedling that information out of me. No way and no how!"

"I could send a certain goalie over to persuade that information out of you," he teased, his hazel eyes sparkling with mischief. I stared at him over the table. Viviana slapped his arm.

"Would you stop tormenting the poor woman so! If you wish to know if the `Cats win it all, or if any of our friends find love, buy the books."

"But Viviana, how do I find time to read when I am working to keep you happy?" Alain asked with utmost sincerity.

"Oh, he`s good," I muttered under my breath.

"Yes he is," Viviana purred, leaning over to steal a kiss from her Wildcat. It didn`t take the couple long to finish their ice cream, snap up the check, and wave goodbye. I sat back with a contented smile. One Wildcat happy ever after, four more to go!
