HEA Blog Tours Presents: THE STORY OF US by d. Nichole King

THE STORY OF US by d. Nichole King
Release Date: Feb. 9, 2017
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
— SYNOPSIS —

Moments.

Every life is made of thousands of them, each one strung together with the next. Some are yellow and happy, some are blue and sad, and some…

Some wipe out color altogether.

“I love you,” is what I should have told Maverick.

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m still fighting.”

Instead I just watched him leave.

Now my husband, my everything is battling for each breath, and all I can do is stare at the machines as the clock ticks off precious minutes.

The doctors said the first twenty-four hours are critical—but every moment is critical.

You never know which will be your last.

This is our story, and I’m not ready for it to end.

— EXCERPT —
I’m cold sitting in one of the waiting rooms in the ICU. Maverick is still in surgery, the nurse tells me. They’ll come get me once he’s in his room. It shouldn’t be too much longer. No one else is close by. It’s just me and my thoughts.

It’s strange the things you think of to distract yourself from the real reason you’re sitting here. Me, I focus on the oil painting on the wall. Wonder how many people have stared at it and wanted to tear it down. How many liked it. Has anyone noticed that it leans a little to the left or that there’s an inconsistency in the corners of the wooden frame? Did anyone deliberate why this painting?

I’m sure it’s meant to calm the people who look at it. Doesn’t everyone find a lake dotted with sailboats calming? But the colors are all wrong. They don’t soothe me. They’re bright and bold and demanding. There’s too much crimson, too dark of navy.

I have to turn away from it. There’re magazines on the tables, but they scream at me too. Loud headlines of celebrities with large divorce settlements, jail time, and plastic surgery. The science ones boast of the newest medical advances and archeological finds. What they don’t realize is that in here, life beyond these walls no longer exists. In here, there’re only three things that matter: life, death, and the battle between them.

I shiver again. I should have brought warmer clothes.

Hugging my knees to my chest, I focus on the fake plant in the corner. There are no windows in this area, which is how I know it’s fake. It might be a fern of some sort, I don’t know. The leaves are long and skinny, but again, the color is wrong for this place.

I shift my attention to the hallway. In here, the lights are dim, but out there they’re on full and reflecting off of the cream floor. There’s a nurse at the nurses’ station, sitting behind a computer. She’s different from the one before. A moment later, another walks up to the desk. They keep hushed voices, and I hear nothing. The one at the computer lifts her eyes to me and when she meets my gaze, she offers a sympathetic smile. I don’t smile back.

I lower my head until my cheek rests on my arms, and I close my eyes. My skin is ice against my face. Cold is what it means to be alone, and right now, I’ve never felt more alone. Alone, but not lonely. No, because being lonely is different than being alone. Lonely is a fleeting state that ends. When Finley gets here, I’ll no longer be lonely, yet without Mav, I’ll still be alone.

I think about the happy moments Mav and I shared. Our time in Cancun. The dance under the stars. His smile. His silly pet name for me.

That was us. The whole, take-on-the-world, in-love us.

The us before we broke.

INTERVIEW

1) Tell us about your book and why you chose to write it?
At its core, The Story of Us is about realizing what you have. It’s about lives interconnecting and becoming one, no matter what life throws at you. I had this idea of writing a story that takes place in 24 hours. But I also wanted the reader to live the moments before that, as if they were reliving it with Alieya. Then everything kind of came together, and Alieya and Maverick’s story was born.

2) If you could be one character inside of your book who would it be and why?
In this book, I’d say Alieya. I relate to her. I understand her. And I think this is the first of my books that I dug deep within myself and pulled out issues from my own experiences. There were many times in my own marriage that I felt the way Alieya did, and I think many people do, which is why the story is so easy to relate to.

3) Who is your favorite author and what is your favorite books?
Oh, geez. There are so many ways to answer this. The one book that solidified my reading obsession was Matlida by Roald Dahl when I was in grade school. Then I grew up reading The Baby-Sitter’s Club, Boxcar Children, Fear Street, and anything and everything by Lurlene McDaniel. Now, if your book makes me cry, it’s my favorite.

4) What made you start writing?
I started writing in 6th grade. I read so much, I just assumed writing would be the next step. So I tried it out. Nothing ever came of it and I moved on with my life until one day I decided I was going to try it again. And here we are.

5) Who is the one person that has inspired you the most in your writing?
I would say Lurlene McDaniel was my first inspiration. She’s the one who first inspired me to write, but also to go into pre-med. Later, my inspiration became Stephanie Meyer. Her story is well known and so encouraging to aspiring writers. I thought, “If she can do it, why can’t I?”

6) Is there some place in the world that you just HAVE to go to and write about?
I’m not sure I’d want to write about the place, but I’d love, love, love to have a small, one-bedroom cabin in the mountains to go and write for weeks at a time. No distractions, beautiful scenery, and high speed internet.

7) Who is your book boyfriend?
I have one, and no one in four years has taken his place. In Sunniva Dee’s debut novel, Shattering Halos, we’re introduced to a fallen angel, Cassiel. He gets his own book in Stargazer, and I have yet swoon for another fictional male character like I did with him.

8) If you could have one person read the book for audio purposes who would be your star celebrity?
Oh, I am soooo bad at stuff like this. I don’t do names and faces well. It’s a running joke in our house, actually. My husband will point to an actor/actress and I have to guess their name and what other movie/TV show they were in. I never win this “game.”

9) What do you have coming down the pipe in the future?
I am part of an anthology, Beer Goggles, releasing in April. It’s a collection of short stories about those moments after you’ve drunk waaaaay too much. The anthology benefits St. Jude’s Hospital. I’m also working on a companion novel to The Story of Us, titled The Evolution of Us, slated to release later this year.

10) What is your favorite movie?
Ah! I don’t know if I can answer this. I’m a huge movie fan. Every winter, I have to watch Little Women. Sweet Home Alabama is a go-to romance movie for me. I also love The Lord of The Rings, Star Stars, Star Trek, and all the Avengers movies. I think I’ll stop here, otherwise this list might go on for a few pages.
11) Do you have any rituals you partake in while writing?
I blast Spotify through my earbuds when I write. Each book has a playlist of about 25 songs. As I go, I’ll add songs and delete songs until I have the playlist that works perfectly for the book. You can follow me on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/user/12181662287

12) Who inspires you?
My husband. He not only inspires me in writing, he inspires me in life. He’s my best friend, my confidant, my safe place. He encourages me to be the best me I can be. The Story of Us is dedicated to him, because he’s my Maverick.

13) Any last words before the lightening round begins?
First, thank you so much for having me. It’s been a blast.
Secondly, I’d like to thank my readers. Without their support, I wouldn’t get to do what I’m doing. So, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

Interview Catherine MacDonald

Title ROMANCING THE VINES: A TALE OF LOVE, LUST AND REVENGE
Author CATHERINE MACDONALD

Blurb

Francesca Bernard is a vintner in the Sonoma Valley who just can't seem to perfect her wine, her finances, and her love life. She finds herself torn between the man she lives with and the man she loves. A letter arrives from a long-lost cousin encouraging her to travel to Italy to uncover the secret to her wine and her heart. Tension is tight around the vineyard, so she leaps at the chance. Once in Italy, her cousin notices Francesca's torment and convinces her to visit the local seer, who is known to help lost souls. The old woman propels Francesca back through time on a heart-pounding quest where she visits three lives where her survival was in jeopardy. Armed with the secrets and truths, she finally understands how the love, lust, and revenge they have endured for centuries holds the answers to their present survival.
Magna gathered Francesca's hands into her own cool gnarled ones and stroked them lightly. "Listen dearie. No one is allowing you to remain innocent and stuck on the wheel of life and death for eternity, but yourself. Even though the mind forgets, the soul remembers. Hopefully by examining these lifetimes you will understand the truth. You are responsible for the life you have--no one else."
From Sonoma, Italy, and the Middle Ages Francesca travels to uncover the truth of the wine and the two men who have fought over her for centuries. Romancing the Vines is the sweeping romance of Francesca, Enrico, and Giancarlo and the secret to the wine that has been eluding her for centuries.

Interview

1)      Tell us about your book and why you chose to write it. Romancing the Vines is the sequel to Seasons of the Vineyard. I’ve never written a sequel before, but I was asked by several people: What happened to Giancarlo? (He was the very bad boy in Seasons.) Did Francesca and Enrico get married? What happened to the vineyard? I started asking myself these questions and the book flowed. I really had no idea she would travel to the past for the answers, but after visiting France, the plot just came, and the secret to the grapes surfaced. In Seasons, Francesca is a frustrated vintner. She really didn’t want to be a vintner, but her father became ill and she returned home to a vineyard in chaos. She becomes determined to save the vineyard and uncover the secret to the wine, which was buried with her mother. When she meets the bad boy of Sonoma, Giancarlo, she falls fast and the tension between her and Enrico escalates. Fast forward to Romancing the Vines. There is strain between Enrico and Francesca’s relationship. She has not married him like she promised. The grapes are not plump. The vineyard is failing, and she receives a letter from a long lost cousin in Italy. In typical Francesca-style, she decides to abandon the vineyard and her responsibility. In Italy she meets a seer who propels her back through time on a quest where she visits three lives in which her survival and the grapes were in jeopardy. Armed with the secrets and the truths, she finally understands how the love, lust, and revenge the three of them have endured for centuries holds the answers to her present survival and the survival of the grapes.

2) If you could be one character inside of your book who would it be and why? Giancarlo, because I have a very naughty streak inside.

3) Who is your favorite author and what is your favorite books? That’s like asking a vintner what’s your favorite wine! Usually, it’s the one you’re crafting at the moment. So usually, it’s the book I’m reading at the moment. My favorite authors include Madeline L’Engle, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Alice Hoffman, Sue Miller, Anne Rivers Siddons. My favorite book of all time: The Wizard of Oz because there is no place like home.

4) What made you start writing? The nuns kept beating my hands with a ruler because I couldn’t stop talking. Writing made perfect sense and kept my hands free from pain.

5) Who is the one person that has inspired you the most in your writing? My dog (s). Some of them have passed on, but I know I will see them again someday and we will run through the fields together. Currently, my doodle, Lulu, listens intently, and snores by my side.

6) Is there some place in the world that you just HAVE to go to and write about? Yes. I have to go back to France because I know I lived there in a past life.

7) Who is your book boyfriend? Matthew Clairmont, the handsome vampire from Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy. To be that sexy after fifteen hundred years!

8) If you could have one person read the book for audio purposes who would be your star celebrity? My book? Shirley Maclaine—she gets the past life theory.

9) What do you have coming down the pipe in the future? The Era of Desire: set in 1923 in a speakeasy. The Buddha and the Bear: a current day fable.

10) What is your favorite movie? Eat, Love, Pray

11) Do you have any rituals you partake in while writing? Show up on the page.

12) Who inspires you? My grandchildren!

13) Any last words before the lightening round begins? No

As punishment for plotting with his brothers to steal immortality, Garreth is suffering a freezing torment until the end of time. Again and again, his fierce fighter’s physique is frozen into a chiseled ice sculpture, his heart hardening like a diamond in his chest—only to thaw and resume the chilling torture. Until, like his older brother Dethan, he is offered a reprieve from a goddess—in exchange for his allegiance in a celestial civil war.

Garreth lives to fight and fights to live. But while laying siege to an embattled city, he finds another reason to go on—a beautiful warrior woman named Sarielle, who commands a mythic beast through a mysterious and powerful bond. Terrified of her strength, the city rulers have kept her captive, and now she refuses to submit to a new master. As Garreth seeks to unleash her passion and melt the icy resistance of her heart, will he become her ultimate salvation—or lead them both to greater destruction?

Review

Better than the first one! Don't you love when the second book is better than the first? That's how I feel too. Garreth led us on an amazing adventure that had even more inside of it than Dethan's book. I can only hope that book 3 will be just as much if not more awesome!

This book had a totally different kind of conflict inside of it. At first I was slightly worried that since both were love stories then there would be some overlap or similarities with the second as the first book had. Luckily i was wrong!

Book 1 let us learn all about Dethan's temperament which we discover in book 2 actually changed now that he was married and a father. I was actually kind of surprised by the change in tone with him.

But what I loved was Darreth and Sarielle. All women know men can make things so much more complicated than they really are and that's what Darreth did. It was annoying yet enjoying.

And I loved the dragon! I'm not going to say more on him as it will ruin some of the surprises. But, I loved him!

Ms. Frank continues to write excellent fiction. I wish all the authors I read were as easy to follow and as enjoying as her. These pages flew by for me and I am sure they will for you too.

INTERVIEW

1)      What made you start this new Immortal Brothers series and how many books do you think you will have in it?

JF: I was in the mood for something different. I wanted to change it up a little from the NIGHTWALKERS series, and this is what came to me. There’s going be 4 books in the series.

2)      Is there any chance we will see more of the Gods playing a bigger factor in all of these worlds? Not just the small roles we have seen thus far.

JF: The Gods generally play the same role as in the first book, but they figure more into the story in the last book.

3)      How did you come up with the different races that you portrayed inside the book? Was it easy or hard? Did you have a clear image of what you wanted or did it evolve as you wrote the stories out?

JF: It was pretty easy for me. It generally evolved as I wrote the story. I have no plans, it just generates itself in my mind as I write.

4)      Are you a plotter or pantser?

JF: I’m a pantser! I write things down as I go only for the sake of keeping track of what I’ve already written. My memory ain’t what it used to be!

5)      What inspired you to start this new series?
(same question as #1)

6)      The NIGHTWALKER series is amazing, I truly love it. I enjoyed the last two books that came out, FORGED and FORSAKEN, how did you come up with that in depth series?

JF: It’s the same as I said before—it just generates as I write. I don’t plan things out, I just regurgitate words!

7)      Was there ever a time when you didn’t think you wanted to continue in the fantasy/paranormal genre?

JF: No- paranormal and fantasy is my niche.

8)      Did you always want to be a writer? Was there someone who inspired you to pick up a pen and start creating worlds?

JF: I always wanted to be a writer—I started when I was 13 years old. The only people who inspired me were the authors I read every day.

9)      Will there be another NIGHTWALKER book?

JF: There’ll be one more, the last book. It’s called FORGIVEN.

10)   Is there anything you have in the way of advice for aspiring and up and coming authors?

JF: Just don’t give up! Keep trying. Take chances. If I had done those things, I would have been published a lot sooner than I was.

11)   What’s your favorite part of living in North Carolina?

JF: Beautiful mountains, beautiful weather…what’s not to love?

12)   I heard a rumor you have some ‘sexier’ writings out there, can you tell me about them?

JF: You might want to check out the books I write as “Jax.”

13)   I like to do a lightning round, so these are quick questions
a.       Light or Dark Dark

Interview with Houston's KRPC's Local Weatherman Anthony Yanez: New Book Release

An Interview with Anthony Yanez

First off - I want to thank you for virtually stopping by Memories In A Box's blog to let me interview you today. After watching you talk about the weather for years this is a real treat for me. My "interview series" on Memories In A Box is mostly left for those individuals who I admire and follow. So I am extremely grateful that you are taking this moment to hang out with me.

His book can be purchased on Amazon once it is released here: AMAZON

Or you can pre order it on his website here: PRE ORDER NOW

BLURB:
Join Jake and Alice on an adventure through time and weather. From the belly of a T-Rex to falling snowflakes, the two water drops learn about friendship and the water cycle as they evaporate and precipitate their way through this wild ride! Imaginative illustrations are accompanied by water drop insets with fun facts about the water cycle all of which is presented in language accessible to elementary students.

Now onto the fun!

I have to admit this was the first children's book that I have read about weather, probably since
elementary school but I really enjoyed it! I learned all about the water cycle. My first question to you is this ... What made you come up with the idea to explain children how water cycles are important?

The idea came about a little after I moved to Houston more than 11 years ago.  I got invitations to speak to elementary students about the weather and I needed something to keep their attention.  For kids 2nd to 5th grade I created a PowerPoint about severe weather safety.  Pre-schoolers, kindergartners and 1st graders have a different attention span and need more of a story.  So I made up a story about two drops of water and the water cycle.  I had a boy and a girl come to the front of the class and play out the parts. What you'll read in the pages of A Wild Ride on the Water Cycle is what I had the students act out.

I have to say the idea of drinking the same water that a T-Rex drank makes me laugh, I would never have thought of it like that. But it made me wonder, how has the quality of water diminished since the T-Rex's and their partners in crime roamed the earth?

This really is beyond my area of expertise.  But water cannot be created or destroyed, it can be polluted but it is always around.

What made you start writing children's books? Was there a specific moment that was your 'Ah-hah' moment or is it something that you have just known you wanted to do?

The ah-ha moment was that I wanted something to share with younger kids at schools.  The hard part is actually getting published and that journey took seven years.

I have to admit, science wasn't my favorite subject in school. It wasn't my least favorite either. But I don't remember it being as easy to understand as your children's book was. Did the plot and explanations of each step in the water cycle come easy for you, or did you have to do a lot of work in deciding the best way to explain it on a level anyone could understand?

It came really easy.  My job is to know the weather and this is the foundation of what makes our weather.  I'm always telling stories to my own kids and friends so that came pretty easy too.

Will Jake and Alice have other adventures?

Yes, in fact the second book is already complete.  This time the adventure will take place in the clouds. After getting caught in a thunderstorm, Jake and Alice get lost and can't find their way back home. With the help of some friendly and not-so-friendly clouds, the adventure begins. Have you ever looked to the sky and wondered, "What kind of cloud is that and how does it form?"   The next book answers that question.

I loved the illustrations. Did you have any input in those or was that all your illustrator, Mike Guillory's vision?

I met with Mike and shared my illustrations and layout of the book. He said it really helped him put his images together.  I have an example of my drawings at www.anthonyyanez.com and you can see what a true artist Mike is and how awful I am at drawing.

Have you considered writing books like this for older children? I found your ease of explanations easy to follow and thought it would have been nice in school if I had had books like this to help me learn science.

I haven't, maybe after this series has run its course. But for now I'll stick to children's weather books.

From Weatherman to Author ... what do you find most fun about both categories?

They are both great.  Broadcast is an exciting job and I'm finding how rewarding it is to be a published author.

I have always wondered, what is the hardest part about forecasting the weather, aside from the fear you might be wrong?

The hardest part is knowing where to point, that is the thing that takes the most practice.  There isn't a fear of being wrong.  You collect the data available, work as hard as you can using your experience to make a good forecast and what happens, happens.  We are predicting the future and at times we will be wrong.

Have you ever had to broadcast the weather from a location that made you fear for the outcome? Like in a hurricane or tornado for example.

No, I did broadcast from Tropical Storm Grace in 2003 but it wasn't scary.

Do you have any advice for future authors, or weathermen?

Work hard and never give up on your dreams.

Thank you again for letting me interview you. This was a thrill for me and I wish you so much luck with your book and your adventures when you leave Houston.
