Happy Birthday Blood Purple!

6 years ago today I became an officially published author. It was a huge deal for me to accomplish this, as it would be for anyone. My parents joined me for dinner that night to celebrate along with my hubby & two of my best friends. The writing community had welcomed me and it was the beginning. The beginning of my dreams coming true. It was by far one of the most memorable moments in my life, right up there with my wedding day, my children's adoption day, my graduation days, and the day I received my black belt in martial arts.

When moments happen in life that change you forever, you tend to remember those. Writing had always been an outlet for me, that wasn't anything new. The new part was letting the world read my writings, letting my work become judged, putting myself out there, exposed.

It's kind of like having that nightmare where you show up to school naked, everyone points and laughs. That's sort of what I was afraid of, when releasing BLOOD PURPLE. I was petrified I would be shunned.

I didn't understand why I had such trouble in English growing up. Grammar, spelling, conjugating sentences, you name it, I sucked. But what I could do was write a hell of a good story. I was very creative. In my debate class I wrote original oratory and the best part, no grammar involved as it was a speech. I loved it and I really enjoyed the whole process. I look at my writing sort of like that. The main difference is people DO see the written words this time around.

But, I took the risk. I sent my manuscript off. The first company I sent it to was an England based publisher who liked it, but didn't publish books in the genre I wrote so they suggested I find a small press who did. I next sent it to a small publishing house in Canada. I ended up contracting 3 books with them before it was over.

If I knew then what I knew now, I would still choose to not go into indie publishing straight away. I learned a lot signing with two publisher's. I ended up actually having 4 books total with small press before I went completely indie. Both publishers taught me something different and I am glad that I had that opportunity to learn.

The Faces Of Blood Purple

My debut novel has had a couple face lifts. I remember when I was emailed the original cover, I cried. I had thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread! haha. Oh what did I know back then, I sold a lot that first month so hey, guess it had something right!

I have always had an affinity for swords and in my mind this book was represented best by my weapon of choice. I was once asked if I had any sword training in my martial arts and I hate that the answer is no. I would love to someday acquire sword training, if nothing, just to say I could do it.

Don't get me started on the idea of making my own sword, oh boy! One day my hubby will have his own forge shop for stuff like this, once we can retire on my novel revenue, LOL. Then I will make the KADIN sword.

I can picture it perfectly in my mind ...

When I separated with XOXO Publishing I had asked a friend who did graphic art to help make a cover. As you can see, once again, the sword is present.

"I'm not just a princess, I am a warrior." I love that quote. It gave me shivers when I wrote it the first time and every time I read it since then I still feel the goosebumps. Nikole in so many ways was me. Is me.

She's flawed, she's doubtful, she's scared. But she is also strong, loyal and willing to do what it takes to survive.

She's a warrior.

I love her, and everything about this character.

Many times in a books life cycle there comes a time when the author needs to re-brand. My sales had sort of died off and I wanted to change all of my covers. This time the sword came back to the focal point, and the blood, I love the blood.

The cover is similar yet different and I think it catches the eye.

This has been the cover I've used longest and yep, you've guest it, it's time for a new cover to come out.

That probably won't happen for a while as life is pretty hectic right now and I don't exactly know what all I want in it. I toss ideas back and forth in my head but I am sure you know the one thing that will for sure be present.

The sword.

When it's all said and done BLOOD PURPLE is at the core of my writing. I cut my teeth on the Algula world and there is nothing I would change about the characters or the stories. I think they are perfect as is.

I would however change some of the editing jobs that transpired back in 2012 but at some point you have to just accept, this was a first novel, there are mistakes. That's one thing as an indie author, I control the editing. With the publisher the editing went kind of haywire and I know that there are still issues left over from that first job.

But that's okay. I feel like the story can still stand on it's own, especially compiled with the other three books in the series. So I just have let it go.

Happy Birthday BLOOD PURPLE! You launched my writing career, you gave me something to be proud of as an adult, and you continue to give me courage to write, as often as I can.

One day you will be a household name, like Anne Rice, Twilight & True Blood. But until then, just know, you will always be my favorite set of characters, deep in my heart.

To Nikole, Zayn, Leigh, Haydar, Derrik, Dominic, Alec, Adara, Nasir & Mehmet - Happy 6 Years of literary life. Here's to another 6 more! Maybe by then you will all be on the big screen and then who knows what will happen from there.

New Release Day: The Ones Who Lived

Order your Copy Here

Blurb:
Anthony and Amelia are regular teens with regular issues, that is, until one day after school they arrive home to find their lives are changing forever. No one knows what causes it, but all of the adults are dead. The only ones left are the young and teenagers. Together, with the help of their best friend Sam and his cousin Sunny, they have to learn to survive and make it through to the next day.

What will happen when their new community is under attack and they have to learn to trust complete strangers? The Ones Who Lived will either come out alive or die fighting.

Hey there! Once again it's release day and this new series, The Ones, is quite different! This is my 20th published completed story and my 23rd story. I cannot believe I have written so much in just 7 years!!

My daughter had asked me to create a story for her, and since she is a teen, I went with Young Adult. For the most part the only YA I read is dystopian and one thing I always wondered, what happens when the apocalypse actually starts? We all have read the stories where they take place years into the future of the dystopian culture, but I have never read that moment when it all happened.

Last year my family vacationed in Saint Pete's Florida to visit my cousin who was graduating high school. It was on this trip that my husband and I started tossing around ideas for the game plan on how a bunch of adults were going to become killed off.

Let me tell you, there was quite the debate going through our little clan on why the adults would die. I'm not going to spoil it for you as you gotta read the book to find out what the actual killing catalyst is, but I can tell you, my hubby was crazy with his ideas.

I will give you this much, my hubby wanted the cause of death to be sex. Mind you, this was meant to be a YA book, so how would I get a bunch of kids to read it if I was promoting 'sex kills'? Craziness. Anyway ....

Lucky for the reading audience I can safely say SEX is not the cause of death! Whew!

There is no secret that witch craft is among the topic in this world. You find out quickly that one of the main characters is a witch! What we don't know, including me the author, is how deep into the witch craft this series will take us. I haven't decided yet. I love bad guys, as many of you already know. Part of me really wants book 2 to be a 'bad guy' book which would then let us explore all about the coven's we see in the epilogue. Who knows what will happen, certainly not me!

You all know I am a pantser and any idea of 'planning' makes me uncomfortable! So the next in the series will just have to be a surprise for all of us.

What I really loved about writing this story was the challenges it gave me. I wanted to make sure it was 'easy' enough for teens to read without making the topics too far over their heads. I also needed to make it 'clean'. Which, if you know my writing, sex and cussing typically come up in  a lot of my fiction. The worst word I use is 'crap' and if I remember right only a handful of times. There are a couple, and I mean just a couple, of kissing scenes. My daughter says there needs to be more romance in book 2!

But this was very much geared towards the younger reading population, I would say 7th through 12th grade mostly. That doesn't mean adults won't enjoy it. Each of the Beta Readers who gave me feedback all were very pleased with the story and how everything fell into place. One reader told me she didn't think it was a YA novel because it could apply to anyone. So that was very good feedback, I wanted to make sure everyone could attach to the characters.

I am hoping to start book two by January or February that way it can release again in September. That's the only plan I have currently, we will see how it goes!

I can't wait for all of you to go out and read it, tell me your thoughts! It really is a lot of fun and I know you will enjoy it.

See you all soon!

P.S. If you want a signed print copy I have a few more left from the Pre-Orders, I'll be placing another order in the next week or so. You can email me at: ashley@ashleynemer.com. New Release: HoneySuckle Love by Ashley Nemer

Happy New Release to Merewyn and Jessie, my two new lead characters of HoneySuckle Love!

I want to give a quick apology, I made this blog last week but I forgot to press ‘publish’ so just pretend I put this post out on the actual release day. 😝 It will be our secret hehe.

So HoneySuckle Love was inspired by one of my besties, Mez. She’s from the UK and our friendship developed in an online book club. Mez inspired the character Merewyn, and not just because she was her namesake. Ironically, when I first created the story and started writing the bad guy, Albert, had a different name. I didn’t know at the time but I picked the same name as one of Mez’s brothers so she had me change it. Funny though! As my daughter would say, just more reasons the story was meant to be.

HoneySuckle Love is my first dip into the true contemporary romance genre. I’ve had obvious love stories in other books but they weren’t romances. This was a cookie cutter story because I wanted to target different readers, challenge myself, and just try something new.

I am really pleased with how this novel panned out and I have ideas in place for book 2 and 3. My daughter and I have started brain storming what the arc will be for book 2.

I know I have mentioned this before but all through school English was my hardest and most challenging subject, so seeing my writing develop over the last 7 years is a big deal for me. I will always love Blood Purple and Wolf Pack, my two first stories, but this novel really cut the mold for me. I can clearly see the development of my quality and character development.

It is always something amazing as an author when you can look back and see how far you have come and how great it feels knowing your work brings people joy.

I did something a little different this new release, I offered ARC to non-friends. I wanted real true and honest feedback. Everyone who contacted me had nothing but positives to say and that’s new for me. Usually there are critics about wanting different story lines or more character depth. But something really worked this time. Which makes me thrilled. I am really looking forward to more feedback from readers.

Hopefully you all take the time to give HoneySuckle love a chance.

Happy Release Day Merewyn and Jessie ... May your story inspire high school sweet hearts everywhere.

Where to find Ashley Online

CHAPTER ONE – December 2015

“Love is in the air here in Cedar Rapids. We have weddings and babies showing up every few weeks, and our great city couldn’t be happier. Join us next week when I venture out to the store and start my nursery décor. Until tomorrow, Cedar Rapids, this is Nadia Maverick-Ali, signing out”
“And cut!” the station manager yelled. “That’s a wrap.”
Nadia pushed her chair away from the desk and stood up. Her left hand instantly went to her lower back as she waddled her way down from the stage and to her dressing room. As she passed by Junior, she gave him a high five.
“Good show today, J.R. I’m excited for next week.”
The station manager smiled at her and shook his head. “Nadia, I keep telling you, you’re not going to make next week. You’re going to pop any day now. Please just take the leave of absence. I’ll have one of the interns sub for you until we can find a proper replacement.”
“No way, I’m not giving in that easily. This baby is making it the full forty weeks. That means there is no way he or she is being born in two thousand fifteen.”
“The pool has you bursting on Christmas Eve. You know that?”
That made Nadia laugh. “How much is it up to?”
“One fifty on the twenty-fourth.”
“And when is your spot?”
Junior smiled at her with a sinister look. “The twenty-third.”
“Put me down for December thirty-first. We’ll call him or her ‘Tax Credit.’” Nadia let out a jolly laugh and continued to her dressing room.
Nadia loved her job. She had thought it would be hard to give up being a reporter, but she’d found being a personality on television was exactly her speed. It was much safer for starters. She didn’t take on such dangerous jobs, but perhaps that was simply a happy side effect of being pregnant. She’d thought Carlisle was overprotective when they had first become friends. He had gone to great lengths to keep her safe, and had even installed state-of-the-art cameras to make sure no one was in house unwanted.
But then she’d gotten pregnant.
She’d had no idea what overprotective really was until the day she’d came home to find a Hummer in their driveway. It was a light blue, and in some lights it even looked a bit white. The inside was decked out with leather interior, heated seats, and an amazing stereo system. At first she’d thought that one of Carlisle’s friends had shown up for an unexpected visit, but that hadn’t been the case at all. He had bought her a new car, no, not just a car, a tank.
And that’s when she’d known it was going to be a long pregnancy.

New Release: Maverick Touch The Adventure, Book #3

It's FINALLY here!!! Happy Birthday to me and Happy Release day to Nadia, Mr. A, Anabella and Mr. J!

HOW EXCITING IS THIS?!?!?!

I'll tell you how exciting, VERY!

This book has been an insane adventure for myself and the characters. I can't think of where to start when I recall how this story came to life.

I wanted to do something fun and exciting so I asked my friend, you I'm sure know her from other blog posts, Jen where I should send these 4. She is of course Carlisle and Carter's biggest fan.

Some how or another we ended up in Africa. I didn't pick the actual destination until like 25,000 words into the story. Crazy I know!

There have been just many many different things keeping me occupied as of late. Mostly things that are beyond any amount of control on my part. But my characters eventually forgave me for the neglect and gave me this great story to tell.

That's the truth of it - These characters give me the story and I give it to you. They are very much alive in my head and that gives me comfort knowing their story will continue on.

One thing I did discover is the story of Kain. I knew that his story would eventually be told but I had no idea what that story was. Until a couple months ago. And it felt like lightening went off in my head and I was like OMG that's his story!

So I am very excited to have the opportunity to write Kain and his sons stories this fall.

NANO here we come!

I hope all of you enjoy the third installment of Maverick Touch The Adventure. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this next chapter of this exciting family.

Happy Readings and XoXo

EXCERPT
CHAPTER ONE
2014
Zara couldn’t help staring at the vessels that passed by her cove. Each one contained a different story and a different set of sailors. Her father had warned her that interacting with the humans, or even simply studying them, was an addiction, one she would soon have to learn to overcome. Each mermaid was presented with the same challenge on their twenty-second birthday. They each had to make a choice to stay in the waters and live with their families, or to give up everything they had always known, for love, and join the human race.
For thousands of years, the merpeople had joined the two-legged humans’ culture, going undetected. And it wasn’t as if mermaids could never go into the waters again afterwards. Each full moon they had the opportunity to dive into the salty water of the ocean and join their fellow merpeople under the moonlight. However, each full moon that passed made that transition harder and harder for the mermaid to accomplish. The longer they were out of the ocean and away from their mer-form, the harder it was on their body to shift back to their original form.
She knew that her decision was about to be due. She hadn’t told anyone what she was thinking about choosing; she didn’t want the added pressure from King Triton, her father, and his brother, Poseidon, her uncle. Humans always got the lineage wrong in their stories. So many of the gods were intertwined that they all ended up being related to one another in some way or another, but the rules for joining the human race were strict. A merperson could only marry once, and it could only be for love. Any other reason wouldn’t be approved. You had to have King Triton’s blessing in order to make the final conversion into the human world.
“What are you looking at, Zara?”
Her head whipped around to the side to look at Sadie, her mother, who was swimming in the lagoon. “That ship out there. It comes by here every day around this time, like they are just waiting.”
“They are predators. Always remember that.” Her mother’s tone was adamant.
“You only say that because you don’t know them yet. Everyone is a shark to you,” Zara retorted.
“Men are men, Zara. They will kill to get what they want.”
“Is that what you tell Daddy?” Zara valued her mother and knew that she would always be there to support her, but she worried that her mother was constantly trying to sway her against all human men and make her change her mind about the choices she had spinning around in her head.
“Your father is different. Gods know how to treat their women,” she said flatly.
“No, they don’t, Mother. You are just blinded by love.” She watched the curve of her mother’s lips come up and form a smile. It was the truth. Her mother and father were very much in love, even after all these years and hundreds of children.  Humans talked about having large families with nine or ten siblings. They should try having two hundred and fifty nine sisters and twice as many brothers.
“And what a blindness to have. You should be so lucky, young lady.”
“One day, Mother, maybe I will be.”

EXCERPT

CHAPTER ONE
The beginning of the earth’s creation …
Fire and lightning flared around the mountaintops of Har ha-Elohim. The air whipped back and forth while the four Gods paced up and down the valleys. There was a storm brewing in the air. The taste of salty rain touched the four tongues of the deities who were invading this new realm.
“Isaf, it is time to make this land flourish,” Hubal commanded. He raised his arms out past his sides, over his shoulders, and then above his head. The rain began to beat down on them, growing stronger with each inch his arms moved up his body.
“Hubal, what do you want me to use as a starting point?” Isaf moved over to stand next to his leader. Each step that he took made the ground beneath him rumble.
“Take this land with you; we will make a new home on this plane called Earth. We will be Gods greater than all others. Our pantheon will not only have our realm, it will have a planet to claim as well.”
Tornadoes and water spouts started to form along the land and lakes. Na’ila came behind Isaf and stood next her bonded mate. Hubal watched her take Isaf’s hand, and then he motioned for Manad to join them in the valley.
“Sun, moon, ground, air, water, all of us joined together, we will create the greatest place in all of eternity. We will create Earth.”
The four deities held hands in a circle and began to chant low. Their voices carried over the plains and through the valley. Isaf’s ground started to move under them, and within a few hours, their reality changed. They began to watch as trees, rivers, grass, shrubbery, and sunlight became their surroundings. When they let go of their hands, a loud, cracking thunderbolt went off in the sky. They looked off to the east and knew that their enemy, Zeus, was casting them out.
He’d cast them out of the realm of other Gods, the place they had known as their own for their lifetimes. He had cut them off from their families, mates, and children alike. It was up to these four beings to bring life to this new planet, make it flourish. Hubal knew that once this was a success, they would be able to go out and claim other parts of the galaxy, and eventually the other Gods would seek out their creation as a new place for escape, peace, and freedom.
“We did it,” Manad said. He broke free of the circle and ventured off into the west. He moved across the grass, the sun following him along his journey.
“Look how the blades of grass follow the light. They move in an east to west pattern,” Na’ila noticed.
“Manad doesn’t know how powerful he is going to be here on this new planet. Everything will rise by his command and set by his slumber.” Hubal could see into the future. He could feel and taste what their paths held for them all.
“And what about you?” Isaf said. “What happens to you when your friend is off walking away?”
“I’ll follow him. Every day, when his sun sets, my moon will be there to catch him and follow the same course he took that day, cleaning up any mess that might have been left in his wake.”
“And this is the life you want for yourself?” Na’ila’s disapproving gaze wasn’t missed by the two other Gods standing there.
“No, it is my duty to protect us all. I brought is here; I will see that we all thrive.”
“Then let us begin the creation of this new realm.” Isaf kneeled on the ground. He placed his hands palm down on the fresh blades of grass. His magik was different. He balanced himself out. When in one section he created earthquakes, in another he created mountains. He brought land and water together before he was done, and a solid continent was formed, a vast and glorious creation.
